goiter 14 year old female

Posted by Gen on June 02, 2003 at 21:43:55:

My daughter had a needle biopsy on her thyroid goiter. The test results were nonconclusive. We were sent to a endocrinologist. The endo doctor at UCLA ordered blood tests, thyroid panel, cancer markers. He thinks the goiter
has to be removed one way or the other. When I asked about
trying natural thyroid hormone he didn't think my daughter would be helped. Is a goiter on both sides of the thyroid
in a butterfly shape? My daughters lump is only on the right hand side?

I'm assuming that your daughter is hypothyroid; low-functioning thyroid, since you're talking to to your doctor about thyroid replacement hormone. The thyroid gland itself is a butterfly-shaped organ. If the nodule is only on the right-hand side, it's that side of her thyroid gland that has grown beyond its natural size. If her nodule is non-cancerous, you shouldn't have to have it removed, I wouldn't think. I have the same issue and have had the nodule for about 20yrs now. My surgeon told me that it wasn't necessary to remove it unless I was having pain and wanted it removed. I took Synthroid for 11yrs and it made me feel horrible. I just use nutritional supplements now; no drugs and my nodule is much smaller than it was before. The key is to strengthen the immune system so that the thyroid doesn't have to work so hard, i.e, growing to compensate. Taking the nutritional route gives the thyroid the chance to go into remission on its own rather than having to have it removed or destroyed by RAI, not the best choice, I understand.

Hi, Gen.

What have you learned from the thyroid archives. All that she would need to eliminate this problem has been discussed many times.

Walt

I looked at the archives for goiter and did not find anything
specific. She tried tapping and became very depressed and
refused to try it again. Has anyone had this experience?

Thanks

Hi, Gen.

ALL thyroid conditions have the same basic causation! Which specific thyroid diagnosis appears is a function of the person's genetic make up. The approach to reversal is the same in every case.

Have her practice serious wellness (glossary and archives and home page article) for 6 months and let us know how she is. It may take as long as 2 years till her problem is totally resolved but by 6 months everyone will know she is on the right track.

Walt
