I just learned I have a low level thyroid.I 've read where the normal range is 3.0-5.0.My level is 8.3.I am going to be 37 soon I had a baby 6 months ago and have been suffering with lots of things.Headaches ,moodswings, heavy periods, weight gain, fatigue.I go to my Dr. tomorrow. Is the 8.3 level bad?Is it correctible with meds.?If I take medicine for this will I see dramatic improvements to my health?Especially weight wise...I have been miserable ever since my baby was born....

Hi 1 madi,

That whole list of things going on with you makes me think that you would do well to start Practicing Serious Wellness. Read the article "How to be Healthy" and then the article and glossary entries for "Skilled Relaxation" to get you started.

Best wishes,
Happygal

madi, your 8.3 TSH level means that you are hypothyroid. That accounts for every symptom that you've described. I had all of the same things when a thyroid nodule was discovered about 20yrs ago. Thyroid replacement hormone (Synthroid - or a generic form of it, thyrolar, Armour thyroid, there are others) is what will probably be prescribed for you by your doctor. Some people do very well on Synthroid, but I wasn't one of them. There are also natural ways to control those symptoms, thank goodness for me. E-mail me if you like.

I was diagnosed 2 years ago with Grave's disease, hyperthyroidism. Last fall, my doc put my on PTU for the hyperthyroidism. Within a month and a half my TSH was 88, not 8.8, but 88 which indicated an obvious hypothyroid. Mine was extremely high and therefore I was extremely tired, cold all of the time, a lot of weight gain and terrible moodswings. My family doctor didn't even know how I got out of bed everyday (I got up and went to work and came home and went to bed at 6, etc). Obviously I was taken off of it and went back hyper within a couple of weeks. I have a more extreme case than most people. Because of the extreme flucuations in levels, I also lost some of my hair. Your levels aren't terribly bad and yes, they will probably put you on Synthroid, though my doc prefers Levoxyl (which I am on as well as a lower dosage of PTU--one for hyper and one for hypo-go figure). But my point being, I have being practicing the SR for a few months now and feel a lot better. It really does help and will give you alot more energy. But you have to really put your all into no matter how tired you are. I excercise 3-4x per week, eat a lot more healthy foods and just relax. Good luck.

Thanks, Maggie.

Now, when the day comes when wellness is the FIRST thing recommended, there will be a lot more people walking around with still normally functioning thyroids.
