Need Thyroid Advice

Posted by Richard [5135.2385] on March 17, 2006 at 13:06:08:

I just had my thyroid retested, and my TSH is 3.73, up from 3.31 in August and 2.81 in May, and have been recommended to take thyroid meds in low dose. I would like to avoid it if I could, and I've been feeling better in the last few months than before. I felt worst in the fall, but didn't have the test done then, so I have no idea if the levels would've been even worse then. I've been using a glandular for the past few months and have noticed difference, been doing SR for 2 months, not long enough for the long term effects yet, and completely changed my diet. For example I feel significantly warmer than I did a few months ago although still colder than average with very cold hands and feet. And this is in the context of having dysautonomia and other issues too. The last thing I want to do is suppress my own thyroid, would I have to worry about that, and since I also have adrenal problems, is it true that adrenal problems can get worse if thyroid meds are used? I admit I'm surprised that the TSH level is still up, but like I said I don't know what it was in the fall when I was feeling worst.

Hi Richard,

It sounds you you are hypothyroid not hyper.

Suppessing your thyroid is the last thing you should worry about because it is already suppressed and not putting out the needed hormones.

If you don't want to be cold all the time and don't want to have a hard time with loosing weight when you
need to... A controlled low dose of Armor thyroid med
with frequent retests of the TSH would be worth doing.

When you can get the TSH well below 1.0 you will be getting close.
Did they mention what your T3 and T4 numbers were in
the range they expect to see?

Are you avoiding iodized salt by any chance? You shouldn't.

Ron

Richard,

How did you certify that your SR was working and how long have you done it since that was certified?

Walt

I haven't got any official certification, I do have the vast majority of the responses listed under the relaxation response in the glossary, with a few exceptions such as I don't get warm extremities, strangely enough the only time my extremities get warm is if I get stressed and have all the other characteristics of the fight or flight response, or sometimes with exercise too. I noticed this particularly the other day when I was fairly relaxed (not doing SR just sitting and reading a book) and my hands and feet were freezing, and my legs were also very stiff and sore. Then I got a phone call which greatly increased my stress level, and very soon my hands and feet were pretty warm and my leg soreness was mostly gone, strange.

I guess I was being unclear, about suppressing my thyroid I was wondering if taking thyroid hormone would keep my own thyroid from working right because the mormone being already there.

As far as feeling cold and weight, I have the opposite problem with weight of being underweight, I'm 6 foot 4 and 150 pounds, last fall I was down to 140 but have managed to gain back what I lost slowly. And as for being cold, I'm quite cold when relaxed, whether asleep, SR, or just relaxed, I have to pile the blankets on at night, but I warm up fast when active or stressed, I remember a year and a half ago, when I was feeling much better than now but still had the cold issues to a lesser extent, I was on a camping trip with some friends and at night I had to bundle up and be in a pretty warm sleeping bag and still had trouble keeping warm, while my friends had theirs partly unzipped and were fine, but during the day while active I could dress just as lightly as them and feel fine.

Hi Richard,

You are hyperthyroid.. If this is not controlled, you risk osteoporosis, heart problems etc.

You probably need to have your med increased to suppress the thyroid. Have you read the symptoms you face?

Sorry, I'm totally lost, the tests indicate hypothyroid, why are you now saying hyperthyroid? Is it possible to have hyperthyroid with a high TSH, everything else I've read says a high TSH is hypothyroid.

Hi Richard,

High TSH is usually an underactive thyroid, low TSH is overactive thyroid.

Do you know what your
T4 and T3 levels are?

For me, the issue is why your thyroid is being treated. Some thyroids are just low because of the body is not functioning correctly, and in that case, I fully believe in glandulars. Then you probably want your TSH around 3 and your FT4 in the upper half range.

However, if your thyroid is being treated because you have an autoimmune condition like Hashimoto's, then treatment is different. You either need to find a way to beat an autoimmune condition (which I believe some people can do), or you go with traditional hormone therapy. In the case of autoimmune thyroid disease, you do want your thyroid suppressed and you most patients on this therapy claim that they feel better when their TSH is just below 1.0. I had a doc that kept my TSH around 3.5 and I felt like crap for years until I got a new doctor. Have you had any antibody tests run? Or biopsies for nodules?

From your other post it sounds like you have both hyper and hypo symptoms, which is not uncommon. Right now your TSH indicates neither hyper nor hypo, if your lab is using the ranges most do. However, it appears that it is increasing over time, which probably means that your thyroid is having a harder and harder time keeping up and ultimately it might crash.

Thanks, Richard.

Since you are one of those people with a paradoxical response to stress and circulation, certification with biofeedback is even more important for you to find your way to what is going to turn around the hypothalamic part of this.

You have encountered others with the same circulation response, how common is it and does it mean anything in particular, are you implying that it is more difficult to deal with the stress effect when you have the paradoxical response like I do? I did actually recently sign up to do biofeedback but not until the end of April because that was the earliest available.

I did get my T4 tested but have not gotten the actual results yet, I was just told the TSH value over the phone so when I get my actual results back I will know the T4, unlike the TSH I haven't had the T4 tested in the past so it 's a new reading for me, I don't believe the T3 was tested but again I will know with the actual results.

Hi Richard,

I hope they tell you the lab normal levels for comparison to your readings.

Hi Richard,

It is very rare to be hypothroid and to not be overweight. That TSH number does point to a thyroid gland that is not producing.

What med are you on to make up for a low thyroid function? (Hopefully Armor and not synthroid)

A low adrenal function could contribute to a low thyroid.
Has anyone tested your testosterone levels?

Here is a link to thyroid supplementation

Thanks, Richard.

Not common but I have seen 2 cases in my 30 years of prectice.
