Hi all! I'm very excited having learned two good possible reasons for the positive effects of tea on my healing from thyroid disease, and I wanted to share them with you.
First a bit of background: I found out about black tea here I think, but had experienced such awful reaction to the caffine in soda and coffee, that it took me several weeks to try it. I had such horrible insomnia at that time, often resulting in less than five hours of sleep a week. So, at my wit's end, I tried a cup of tea. That night, for the first time in two years, I slept like a baby. I have drunk tea every morning, ever since.
But when I tell people that tea has helped my thyroid, the reaction I get is always negative. Tea has caffine, caffine bad, so I am kidding myself. I knew better but could only say, "all I know is that when I drink it I sleep and when I don't; I have insomnia."
Well, I have found out two things that support my claim and I am thrilled to share them with you. The first is the L-theanine in tea. L-theanine is a natural relaxant that helps calm the brain waves. Here is an article about L-theanine:

The second bit of information has to do with caffine and adenosine levels. People with Grave's disease often have trouble with adenosine, and caffine helps tweak it back to normal levels.
So, the combination of calming (far greater than the jittery effects of caffine) and the regulation of adenosine levels, and you have a perfect support for recovery from Grave's, along with a healthy diet, SR and supplimentation of things like selenium.
Cool huh?

That's very good news. Someone else just mentioned the effects of l-theanine being similar to what you just said. Even though tea has about half the caffeine of coffee the other elements may be worth it. Usually people try to stay away from anything with caffeine but may give this a try.

Do you know if green tea has the same properties?
I used to love my green tea. Not to mention the health benefits of
it.
Thanks,
M

Walt, Considering this what are your thoughts on this use of
caffiene when having Graves....would you recommend
decaffienated? Or is it that in this case because it seems to help
her it is ok...
Thanks,
M

I believe that green tea has a lot more of the beneficial l-theanine than black.

Montrese,
I am not a good enough herbologist to have an opinion.
