graves disease vs. hashimotos disease

Posted by brandie on February 23, 2001 at 14:23:00:

I was recently sent for a blood test to see if I had a thyroid problem. I was alarmed to find out that my T4 was very high, 27 and my TSH was <0.01. A second test a few weeks later was similar..T4 21 and TSH <0.01. My endo sent me for a thyroid uptake and scan. The uptake was 59% which I guess is high??? He put me on tapazole which I had an allergic reaction to so he switched me to PTU. I am taking 400 mg. a day (100 mg. 4 times a day). I was told that I have "Hashimotos Disease" because I tested positive for antibodies as well as Graves. Is it possible for me to have both diseases at the same time? I have another appointment with the endo in 6 weeks to discuss treatment. I think I am on the PTU to get my thyroid back to normal so that I can either do RAI or surgery. With my test results being so high, I think the endo is pushing surgery. Is this a good option? Thank you for your time!

Hi, Brandie.

The different diagnoses (which we MDs are very good at) are really based on the person's genetic susceptibility. The basic causes of both of these thyroid conditions are exactly the same. SO, their resolution is exactly the same.

Read the archives about Grave's and about thyroid.

THEN, if you still have questions, write again.

Walt
