I had an ultrasound of my thryoid gland this week which showed that I had a goiter and a multi-nodular thyroid. I have 5 nodules--some fluid filled and some solid. My blood tests came out normal and I am not experiencing any symptoms of any thyroid diseases. The right side of my neck just feels achey and tender to the touch. I am scheduled for a radio uptake and scan next week. I am very scared of all of this---do you have any insight into the multi-nodular and the solid vs. fluid filled cysts? This all seemed to start after a nasty strep infection in February. Thank you....

and it took probably 4 years before some doctor with half a brain figured it out -- aaaaargh.
To be honest, they never did the radio uptake or scan on me, maybe because of what they saw on the ultrasound. It was so long ago, before you could find out so much on the web, that I wasn't very well informed, so I don't know what mine are filled with (or aren't filled with). When they start growing, the endo will do a fine needle biopsy, but most of the time we just continue to treat....
Interesting that you say that this started after you had strep -- because of allergies, I was always getting strep as a kid -- this idea intrigues me.
I have been diagnosed with Hashimoto's thyroiditis -- an autoimmune disorder, so I am on thyroid hormones. We use the hormones to shut down the thyroid and keep my TSH as low as we can without risking any side effects. Doing this, I almost feel normal. I find that taking omega-3 fatty acids (flaxseeds) and MSM helps the inflammation quite a bit. I still haven't found the magic combination. I thought I had until the docs messed with my dosage and set me back nearly a year's worth of work.
I can sympathize witht the achy and tender to the touch -- no more turtleneck sweaters :-( -- and if you sing real loud in the car when your driving, then your voice probably cracks ;o>. I discovered that I was jutting my chin forward to relieve the pressure, and that was giving me a neckache, which in turn gave me a headache.
Sure hope that all goes well for you...

Do you find flaxseeds more effective than flaxseed oil? Thanks, katie

I'm told that the oil is more concentrated though.
My dog can't tolerate oils so I grind the seeds for both of us each night -- figured it's easier if we both take the same thing. She gets hers in cottage cheese, I take mine in juice :-)

The oil must be refrigerated and has a freshness date of not more than 6 months. Do you know if you have to worry about the seeds becoming rancid? Do you refrigerate them?
Again, thanks---katie

Hi, Katie.
The seeds are alive and do not get rancid until after they are killed by grinding.
Hope this helps.

Hi, Susan.
Only knowledge will make you free. What have you learned from the thyroid archives?

LT, have you gone to Mary Shomon's webpages? There is a huge debate about Synthroid, Armour, and something like Cytonel?? can't quite retrieve it. You know there was a class action suit against a drug company about this. They also site some research testing.

Thank you for replying. Yes, I had read through your archives and am going to try SR. However, I didn't see any multi-nodular info and I was concerned about having some solid cysts in the thyroid.

I don't know what Cytonel is though. I've always been on Levothroid, so I haven't paid much attention to all that -- being in an HMO, it's hard to use anything outside of their usual formulations.

my thyroid is the least swollen and doing the best when I keep up with my yoga stretches -- there are certain yoga stretches that are specifically good for the thryoid -- don't know which ones though.......

I actually keep them in the fridge anyway, but I did read just the other day is that they have something in them that acts as a preservative, until they are crushed.
Although Dr. Stoll's description has a better punch to it!

Thanks, Susan.
ALL thyroid conditions respond to the same approach. Some faster than others. Thyroid cancer, although also helped, needs to have anti-cancer methods used as well.
Multinodular Thyroid is just a gentle call for help by your bodymind.
