I was diagnosed with Graves Disease last week and the recommended treatment is RAI. Nine months ago I started Weight watchers and lost 50 pounds. I worked hard at the weight loss but now realize it was probably due more to hyperthyroidism. This realization has just about devasted me. I have other symptoms also – irregular menstrual cycles, hair loss, trembling hands. I went to the doctor because of these symptoms and not the weight loss. . My first reaction to the diagnosis was one of complete vanity. I don’t want to gain the weight back. What are the odds that I would start a weight loss program at the same time as having thyroid problems. After researching on the web over the weekend my reaction is now that I’m terrified. I’ve read so many posts talking about RAI and how terrible you can feel afterward due to hypothyroidism. I’m terrified of doing the treatment and then regretting it afterwards. After reviewing some of the articles in the archive I’m going to discuss anit-thyroid drugs with my endocronologist. But first I’m going to ask for an ultrasound as the scan showed one nodule. I’m going to continue researching but at this point simply don’t know what to do. Any advice or moral support would be greatly appreciated.
