Need Help -- Secondary Amenorrhea with Grave's Disease (Already Gone Through 2 RAI)

Dear Dr. Stoll and all,

I need some help for my endocrine problem and would appreciate if Dr. Stoll and anyone can advise me. Here my story goes.

I am a 23-year-old female. It was about 3.5 years ago in 1998 that my parents suspected that I was hyperthyroid, with most of its symptoms and this disease (Grave・s) running in my family (I think it was also stress-related since I just entered college at that time and had heavy workload). I went to see doctor and blood tests proved this. I knew nearly nothing about Grave・s at that time and I trusted my doctor. He referred me to see endocrinologist who put me on Carbimazole for 1.5 years, gradually reducing from 40mg to none. I was also prescribed Propranolol too. During this period of treatment my weight went from 113 to 146 within the beginning first year, probably because of the medication, and then went down for some as I tried to lose.

Within 2 months after quitting this medicine, my hyper- relapsed. I further lost some more weight because of I was going with the previous (:fattening;) Carbimazole / Propranolol medication and was also hyper- at that time. I eventually get to several lbs below my original weight.

My endocrinologist told me about another option, RAI, which I unfortunately chose when I was convinced by him that it is very effective and almost :harmless;. However, that・s only the beginning of my nightmare.

In August 2000, I underwent my first RAI. The next month my period disappeared. I hadn・t had any missed period before. It completely stopped. It is not resumed even until now. I don・t know if they are really related. I had been having urine and blood test values monitored, and nothing other than my thyroid was wrong. My endocrinologist attributed this as a symptom of hyper-. Well, within some months after the 1st RAI, my T3 and T4 were in normal range. At that time I still needed to take Carbimazole as RAI・s effectiveness appears only months after it is taken.

6 months after RAI, my endocrinologist stopped my Carbimazole. My hyper- relapsed. I was arranged for the 2nd RAI. My weight lowered to around 100. However, this time RAI left me hypothyroid forever. I gained 10 lbs or more back. I now have to take 200mcg thyroxine daily. No longer could my endocrinologist say my amenorrhea was due to my hyper- and he referred me to gynecologist.

I saw my gynecologist Sept 2001 and she checked me physically (lying on the bed). Nothing was found to be wrong with that brief check. She concluded that I might need to gain more weight and keep it for about 2 months in order to have my period back. Since Sept I have gained a little (I am almost about my original 113 lbs when I was healthy) and my period has not been back. My next appointment with her will be in March and I don・t know what her next step for my problem is.

I really need some help. It seems that traditional medicine and doctors are not enough in solving my problem.

1. What are the possible causes for my amenorrhea? Solution?
2. This one is a myth to me: Even though I am hypo- and taking synthetic thyroid supplement now, my TSH is lower than normal (<0.03), while my T3 and T4 are within normal. It has been so for several months. My endocrinologist could not explain that.
3. In addition to whole food diet and SR, what else can I do to remedy my hypothalamus? I have been eating 80% whole food for a year or more, and just started SR. I am also planning to learning yoga soon.
4. Can colon or liver cleansing be helpful?
5. Any other advice?

Thanks very much for reading this long posting and any input is welcome!

P.S. I have read the Grave・s article and most discussion in the thyroid archive.

Hi, Krystal.

Too bad your did not have the information in the archives BEFORE you had the RAI.

Now you have permanent tissue damage that is not reversable.

NONE of the medications you have been given do anything but treat the symptoms. They do NOTHING about the driving causes which is why you keep having relapses.

The SR is the key to protecting what you have left. Yoga will help IF you practice it at least 20 minutes twice a day. Within 6-12 months your menses may even restart. The endocrine system is like a spiderweb. You cannot touch one strand without affecting EVERY gland's function.

Hope this helps.

Walt
