I took Accutane about three years ago when I was 17, and now I have been experiencing my hair thinning and hair loss the past year, My doctor told me before I took accutane that it was very rare, but now I'm hearing that it is not so rare. Some people tell me they cant really notice it, but my family does, and I really do, Ive lost about 50% of my volume, and especially in the back of my head it feels very bare. I just dont know what to do, and I hope that it goes back to the way it used to be, I'm just waiting for it to go back, but if it doesnt, is there anything I can do to help it? or to prevent myself from it getting worse?

Check out the bracing archives and glossary for more info.
I wouldn't be surprised that hair thinning is one of the side effects of Accutane. Imagine what might be going on inside your body that you don't see.

No I dont think it has anything to do with bracing, but thanks for writing anyways. I have a strong feeling it has to do with accutane. If anybody has experienced any of the same problems, or has any advice please reply.

Hi, Victoria.
Listen to Martha (& Victoria--except for her comment about the bracing).
There is nothing you can do about the fact that you took the Accutane. SO, you have to now focus upon what you can do about this problem. That includes making sure that you have no bracing interfering with the circulation to the follicles.
The very same things that you could have done to reverse the acne now are the same things that will help you the most with this complication: serious wellness and omega 3s. See the acne archives and get started. This will not help as quickly as it would have if you had done this in the beginning but it will help a lot.
Let us know how you do.

This is more common than any docs or dermatologists would lead you to believe. Just check out some of the info on the net from people posting about it.
Have a look at some of the Accutane boards where this has occurred to alot of people. I havent really dwelved into the remedy though as my hair is very thick, even after using this drug. The hairloss I experienced occurred only during Accutane use, not after. There use to be huge clumps of hair in the shower drain after washing my hair, and my hair would fall out all over the place. But after finishing the drug, my hair all came back, and its been the same ever since, very thick, even 10 years later.
Flax oil is very good for promoting healthy hair growth. A man I work with says its helped his balding patch. I cant really see much difference in his bald patch, but I take his word for it. :) What hair he does have is very healthy anyway. Its worth a try.
Like Walt says tho its too late to change the fact that you took the drug. Just one of those lessons in life to learn from. Now its time to work on the cause of what started your acne in the first place, and get healthy again.
Good luck!
