skin after tibia plateau fracture

Posted by NA [114.4388] on September 08, 2008 at 08:11:10:

I'm 6 weeks post op tomorrow! Yahhhh!!!!!!!! The skin on that leg is pinker/redder than other leg which is very fair skinned as I have always been? Why the darker color on fractured leg? Thanks!!!!!!!!

NA,

This is from your body's natural response to reabsorbing the deep bleeding from your injury. You also may notice more hair growing there for the first year after the injury. Deep blood extravasation seems to stimulate hair growth.

Thank you for your response! Another question I have: My dr. said 4 more weeks of no weight bearing and then partial weight bearing increasing as I go along--why PARTIAL weight bearing-what is the partial part for? Thank you again!!!

Thanks for your encouragement! I went for check-up Monday morning and fracture is healing well-still 2 or 3 cracks not completed. Dr. said my extension and flexion are ahead of the game which was good news. But, he said no weight bearing for 4 more weeks and then hopefully partial weight bearing over 4 more weeks which now seems like a long time. I know I've got to be careful and do the right thing so I can heal and walk but I tend to be impatient because I have a family and really need to be doing alot more than I am. Did you go from no weight bearing to partial weight bearing and how was this scheduled--I don't know why you go to just partial weight bearing surely they don't let you put weight on it until healling is complete? Thank you for all your responses!!!

NA,

The progression of healing in this type of fracture is SO variable from person to person that only the "doc on the spot" can answer this. At some point you will have to graduate from non weight bearing to full weight bearing. The under water exercises can materially help anyone with this kind of fracture with no potential for harm.

Thank You! My dr. says that I will go from non to partial before full weight bearing and I wonder WHY PARTIAL first might be necessary? Thank you again!!!

NA,

Please enlighten me as to why you do not appreciate that ALL Physical Therapy goes from non to partial to full function. This is especially true of weight bearing problems.

My question is WHY the progression? Is it just to restore muscle tone, ect or not to overdo it to ensure that the healing is completed of the fracture? Thank You!
