Premature Gray Hair

Posted by
Deftone on March 29, 2001 at 13:51:44:

I am 15 years old and am going gray, although not affecting my life in an awful way, it is kind of annoying given my age. I am wondering whether this is common or rare and whether there is anything I can do to stop or slow this, I have heard of something to do with Vitimin B5/12?? I do not suffer from stress to the extent where it would effect my health. This did, however, happen to my father and grand-father so I am doubtfull that there is any way of slowing or stopping this process. I would be gratefull for any feedback you can give me and information on any remidies for this,
Deftone.

Deftone, I read a while back that hair only turns gray because of a mineral deficiency. I believe the specific mineral is magnesium. I have a friend, much older than you, he's turned about half-gray at 44. He does not take supplements and his eating habits are not great (though he doesn't agree). Some people may need more magnesium than the average joe just to avoid these deficient-related symptoms. Check it out. p.s. Research shows that whole food supplements are more POWERFUL at far lower doses and CHEAPER per UNIT of EFFECT than synthetic, pharmaceutically produced "nutrients!" I take MegaFoods myself.

wow! didn't know this Dr. Stoll?

I started turning grey at 20, and I'm 42 now and very salt
and pepper. magnesium deficiency? that would be
interesting for me if that were so, because I have
always suffered from weak brittle nails(mineral
absorption problems), and I get leg cramps if I don't
take cal/mag/zinc. I got them horribly when I was a
child, and so did my daughter. There's other
symptoms I have but i can't think of them right now :-)

Anyway, I have started taking e.f.a.s regularly, also b
vitamins, cal/mag/zinc . There is a combination of
vitamins that you take that helps one absorb the other
but I can't remember that either (it's friday, been a
LONG week, sorry).

So, my question is, I've heard of people who've gone
grey actually getting their normal color back
somehow-diet? vitamins? SR? gee, can I get my
beautiful brown locks back ? Although my boyfriend
loves my grey hair, I wouldn't much care one way or the
other but, it would be interesting to find out if anyone
knows about this.

Hi, Deftone (& Lauri).

Listen to Peter.

I have six brothers and sisters. I am the oldest. They have consistantly laughed at me for my professional bent for 20 years. Now they are all grey and I still have my hair color. They are now timidly asking me how I do it.
'
I am convinced that it is the high doses of antioxidents (C & E) along with a great multivitamin and mineral product I have used for about 25 years. See the archives about supplements.

Let us know how you do since you will be a great example. It will take you about 2 years to see the best results.

Since it is sure that we do not know everything about optimal human nutrition yet, eating a whole foods diet (high in micronutrients) will help supply those nutrients we have not discovered yet.

Walt,

My mother started going gray when she was 27 and is 87 now
Her day was gray for a long time and was healthy to 104. My
dad didn't start graying till he hit 80 and didn't start
loosing hair till congestive heart failure or meaybe the
heart meds after an attack. With a few of us even a BIL the
red hairs turned gray first.

i have read research that said this problem is a failure in proper protein digestion.

along these lines, i read over the weekend in William Rea's first volume of CHEMICAL SENSITIVITY that PABA (component of Folic acid) and B5 and copper can restore natural hair color in this instance. ofcourse, those 3 are involved in protein metabolism.

Hi, B.B.

They, of course, are very individual. In MY case about 4 grams of esterified vitamin C a day, 1000 units of vitamin E and the best comprehensive multiple I could find to cover the micronutrients that work with the higher doses of antioxidents.

Hope this helps.

Hi, Vince.

Genetics still is the most important factor known. However, the Human Genome Project is finding that we are no longer totally trapped by our genome.

Thanks, Leon.

Anything Bill Rea says must be taken seriously. I only have experience with one patient (other than myself) with antioxidents and hair color.

Remember, hair is dead tissue (other than the bulb itself)and is replaced at the rate of 1/2 inch a month for your entire life. SO, correcting the metabolism of the hair bulb would begin creating the hair shaft with normal color. The patient I mentioned totally reverted his hair to normal. Mine has stayed normal.

I would be interested in hearing from anyone with experience with this.
