Is there any reason hair should suddenly fall out all
over my head? I have been checked for thyroid
problems, iron levels, even Lupus, but everything
seems fine. I don't take birth control either. The doctors
have told me there is nothing wrong and nothing I can
do (other than try Rogaine). They call it Androgenetic
Alopecia (or Female Pattern Baldness). I thought only
men got this. Besides I'm only 33! And in good health! I
have lost about 2/3 of my hair in about one year, and it
is really freaking me out. Plus the few hairs that do
seem to grow in are so baby fine, and then they fall out
before the can really grow more than a couple of
inches. It is especially thin at the back of my head and
over my ears, but really it is thinner all over, even on top.
By the way, ever since I;ve had this diagnosis I have
been noticing lots of women with their scalps showing
(even ones younger than me!!!). I never noticed this
before. Is there an epidemic happening? Or am I just
noticing something that has been there all along. It all
seems fishy.
Should I try the Rogaine? I don't like the idea of placing
a chemical on my head for the rest of my life.

That sounds awful, I feel bad for you. Have you been on Accutane? That was my first thought. Please use this link to learn more about baldness and what you can do:

I did take Accutane about 4 years ago. I had no hair
loss when taking it, nor did I notice anything
immediately after. This all started last year suddenly. I
was shedding way more than usual and after about 4
months of this I noticed that all the bounce/volume had
gone out of my hair. Now it just gets worse and worse.
Could Accutane cause permanent hair loss. Did it age
me in some way. I never even thought of this. What can
I do to stop it? Do you know?

Kelly,
I used to "shed" all over the place. My hair lost its color and was a weird texture. PSORIASIS of the scalp was the culprit (finally properly diagnosed by a rheumatologist). Sometimes there was no scaling or sore, just the hair loss.
Psoriasis is fungal overgrowth, and too much sugar in the diet is usually the cause. Are you on an anti-Candida diet?
Nizoral shampoo (available at Wal-Mart) works great. So does rinsing with ACV (apple cider vinegar) mixed with water after shampooing (keep mixture in plastic bottle near bathtub/shower).
Hope this helps you . . . Joan

I had psoriasis when I was little for about one year, and
then it suddenly went away never to return. However, I
have always had trouble with vaginal yeast infections
and have gone through periods of time where I eat A
LOT of sugar, so perhaps I have candida issues that
are on going.
Did your hair come back to normal? I have to say mine
seems healthy (except the shedding). It's shiney and
super soft, it JUST WON"T STAY PUT WHERE ITS
SUPPOSED TOO!!!
I have been using Nizoral shampoo for many months. I
heard Nizoral is anti-androgenic, so thought it might
help the alopecia. Unfortunately it has not improved
things, but I like that shampoo so keep using it.
Thanks for giving me hope!!!

Boy, can I relate to everything you are saying . . Been there, done that, got the T-shirt!
I'm not certain but I think when they say that Nizoral is antiandrogenic they mean the tablets. When taken internally Nizoral has an effect on testosterone.
The shedding was my earliest symptom, then itching, flaking, finally some bleeding. Hair changed color and texture later. Your history of psoriasis in infancy mirrors mine -- I had it on my scalp as a baby (misdiagnosed as "severe cradle cap," which was not uncommon in the sixties), and it plagued me again starting in 3rd grade. (Was raised on traditional American diet -- lots of sugar, white flour, etc.)
Want to save yourself a lot of wasted time and money? Stay away from dermatologists! I went to them for years with nothing to show for it.
If you follow anti-Candida diet faithfully and take some antifungals I'll bet you will see some improvement if it is psoriasis. That's the good news -- it is easily controlled.
BTW, my rheumatologist told me that the hair falls out because of toxins produced by the yeast.
My hair thinned a lot around the temples (the typical "male-pattern baldness" pattern). It has grown back now.
Stick with your current plan and continue using Nizoral shampoo -- it works. ACV/water rinse after shampooing also helps a lot.
Let me know if there is anything else you think I might be able to help with . . . Joan

I've heard a lot about accutane causing hair loss, but I can't say for sure that this is your cause. Did you click on that link? You'll probably find out a lot there. Also go to the acne/accutane archives to learn more about accutane and balding. Good luck!

Apple Cider Vinegar - does this make your hair feel really good/manageable, etc? Does it work as a conditioner or a detangler? I might try it - how much do you use?

Hi. It's been a while since I used it, so I'll have to look it up in my book and get back to you. (Sorry) I think it is 1/3 ACV to 2/3 water, will let you know after I check this.
I premixed mine in a plastic bottle which I kept next to bathtub. Joan

Hi Kathy,
I don't notice a change in the texture or whether it detangles or not, but it sure is soothing to an itchy scalp. Personally, I just pour about 1/4 cup (I don't measure it, just a guess) into a sinkful of water. That seems to be enough depending upon the size of your sink of course.
Namaste`

Hi, Kelly.
The only thing that I know of that can cause this is stored stress-effect in the hypothalamus.

Hi Kelly,
Please update us when you find any good answers. I am in the same boat and searching for any good information. I'm 41 and suspect some hormonal changes, but what hormonal changes - I do not know (yet).
Good luck,
Anna
P.S. My mother in law (who is now 96) once told me she had the same problem somwhere on the way in her middle age (I know you are not there yet...) and "fixed" it by washing her hair with an...egg. True! When I met her (in her 70's) she had a full head of healthy hair and it remains that way till today. She was using only baby shampoo after.
I have not tried that formula myself but thinking about it....

My hair started thinning in my early 20's (I am a 50 yr. ol femaale) after the birth of my first child and has slowing gotten thinner through the years. My hair is pretty much see-thru on the top and sides. As a woman I find this highly embarassing especially when I see people looking at my hair! But I do not want to wear a wig! I believe doc is right that it is caused by stressed as my life has been very stressful. Doc, can hair come back after so many years? Aren't those hair follicals dead???

OK, I talked to my doctor (the one I see about my
candida related illness) about the hair loss and he
says there are two things that can make hair fall out in
the way I am experiencing...low estrogen and low
thyroid. My thyroid readings are somewhat low, so he
thinks that may be part of the equation. But I am having
severe symptoms of estrogen deficiency (including hot
flashes, insomnia, heart palpitations, lowered vaginal
moisture etc). He is trying to help me back into balance
with things like Vite, whole foods diet. He does not want
to give me estrogen replacement (of any kind, natural or
otherwise) because of my age. He says once you start
on that your body ceases to create its own, and he has
hope that I can kick start my estrogen production again.
Plus I still get regular periods, and supposedly if you
are really low on estrogen, you would start to get goofy
cycles. So for the next few months I am trying to regain
balance (physically and mentally), and we'll see what
happens with the hair.
Hey, I might try the egg thing. I've tried just about
everything else with no results!!! I'll let you know if I find
out anything else. Good luck!

Hi, Kelly.
Although the things your doc has mentioned can cause hair loss, by far the most common cause, in your situation, would be storage of stress-effect in the hypothalamus. It is at least contributing. See the glossary and home page for this.

In Reply to: Doc, can my hair grow back with SR??? posted by QT on August 28, 2001 at 18:46:09:
Hi, QT.
The longer the problem has been there the less likely the hair will come back. Since dealing with the physiological alterations due to the chronic stress-effect can only help you in so many other ways, why not deal with it and see how much hair will come back?
See the archives and glossary about stress-effect, SR, wellness, etc.
