Dear Dr. Stoll,
My 9-year-old son gets frequent headaches. He had his check-up recently and the doctor asked him a TON of questions and concluded that the headaches are tension; he mentioned that even children can get migraine-type headaches. But I'm concerned; my son seems so young to be getting tension headaches. The headaches mostly occur in late afternoon, after school. His eyes are fine, they've been checked, too. I should add that I've always gotten lots of headaches. But I was wondering if you have any ideas. Food allergies? Sinus? Thanks!!

Kathy,
Are the headaches throbbing (he can count his heart beat with the pain)? If so, do the hot arms trick in the article on the homepage about vascular headaches. Let me know if it totally relieves the pain within 10 minutes.
If they are NOT throbbing, or if the hot arms does not resolve the pain quickly, these are muscle tension headaches (MUCH more common in children than vascular.) The approach to either kind are VERY different. Let me know what you learn.

My 9 year old son was having frequent headaches, and it turns out he has TMJ. Now that he has a splint to wear every night, has learned how to protect his jaw, never chew gum, etc., he doesn't get nearly as many headaches. Just another thing to consider, right?

KMD,
TMJ is just one of the common muscle tension headaches. Without getting rid of the bracing the TMJ is incurable.
