Hi Dr. Stoll,
Hope you have a nice trip! Just a quick question. I did a search on the internet about magnesium and found that magnesium taurate is recommended for depression, insomnia and migraines, all of which I suffer from.
I just refuse to go on anti-depressents. I have done it in the past and they didn't work for very long and made me feel very wierd. (only treating the symptom?)
Anyway, I have noticed that after taking the magnesium in high doses for a few days, I am sleeping pretty well for a change but I also seem to be very groggy ALL DAY. It has also put a little damper on my appetite. (NOT COMPLAINING ABOUT THIS :)
I am confused a bit, I thought the magnesium taurate (apparently magnesium combined with taurine) was supposed to pick you up so why am I so darn tired all the time? I am at least waking up after a long sleep feeling rested and refreshed for a change, but I know if I take the mag. again I will feel lethargic. Should I maybe just take the stuff at night? What are your thoughts on magnesium deficiency?
I heard the standard tests don't tell you much since blood levels are different than what's going on in your cells. I will say this, I have a lot of the signs of deficiency including facial ticks, cold hands and feet and tingling even in my lips. Haven't had any of that since starting the supplements. Just want to know your opinion on the use of mag. taurate to help with depression and insomnia.

Hi Faith,
I learned by experience from taking magnesium that it has some kind of interaction with B vitamins. I think the two need to be taken at the same time. So one thing you could do is try taking similar sized doses of B complex along with your magnesium dose and see if it helps.
In my case, I needed a lot of both B complex and also extra B3.
Best wishes,
Jan

Hi, Faith.
Listen to Happygal.
The quickest and most accurate way to tell if low intracellular magnesium is contributing to this would be to do the IV series described in the magnesium archives.
Let us know what you learn.

I have been using magnesium for several months with great success. I usually
take about 250 mg before bedtime so I don't get the LULL in my energy level.
I am also taking B vitamins to help me with my energy level, but I take these
during the day. The B6 can sometimes keep me awake. Also don't take
caffeine after 6 and try to eat relatively early in the evenin. So far, it is
working very well, and I'm sleeping better at night, plus I have fewer
headaches and better moods.
If you are interested in natural remedies for depression, I recommend you
read a book called Balance Your Brain...Balance Your Life.
