Chronic Headache

Posted by Tomi on August 03, 2000 at 17:08:14:

I had Anterior Cervical Microdiscectomy on 5/7/99 and was headache free after having headaches for several years. In August '99 I hit my head on a metal bar and the headaches are back. a Catscan, MRI and neck ex-rays show no damage. I have tried several pain medications and they only cause me to sleep and don't stop the pain. The pain gets worse when I am active. I am desperate for a solution. Thanks

Hi Tomi,

Sure sounds to me that you need a chiropractic evaluation.

At what level was your surgery?

Hi, Tomi.

Listen to Doc Kim (Thanks, Doc Kim!)

This is bracing until proven otherwise. It is the bracing that makes you susceptible to these kind of injuries AND that keeps them going long after they should have healed. See the glossary for any unfamiliar terms.

The surgery was Anterior Cervical fusion from C4 through C7. Spondylosis. I have been to a chiropractor several times, have had trigger injections and acupuncture. The acupuncture seemed to help at first but then had no effect after about 4 or 5 treatments. Have also tried reflexology.
I have less pain when I am laying down.

I was rear-ended in 1993, and my spinal health has deteriorated since. I have tried every treatment imaginable starting with non-invasive therapies and finally opting for a laminectomy between C 5-6 in 1998. My discography revealed at least 4 discs with internal disc derangement. The original plan had been to remove three discs, but once they discovered at least four offending discs, they only took out the worst offender. Stress transfer was the reason given.

I improved for a while, but now two other discs are in just as bad of shape as before my previous surgery.

I have had some doctors recommend a complete cervical discectomy as being the only way out of my pain. The trade-off would be a loss of mobility in my neck.

Has anyone on this list had this procedure? What is it like to not be able to turn your neck? How much is flexion and extension compromised? Did the surgery eliminate your pain?

I am in such constant pain I live on Vicodin. When the pain gets so severe I can't lift my head off the pillow, I knock myself out with Stadol. I've researched the archives here and can't find anything about a full cervical laminectomy.

Please don't suggest alternative treatments; I've tried them all.

I am a 48 year old female with a Ph.D; an author who can no longer sit at her computer, let alone sit up to read a book. I am in severe pain 24 hrs. a day. This is not a life. I have to do something, but need some guidance as to the recovery and outcome of this seemingly drastic approach.

I would gladly sacrifice range of motion for lack of pain.

Can anyone out here help me?

Thanks,

Rocketgirl

Hi, Rocketgirl.

I will bet that you have not "tried all the alternative approaches"! No one even yet KNOWs them all.

Unless you have spent a few hours in the archives about Spinal Problems, you are missing the boat.

First of all the accident only pushed you over the edge of what would have happened to you anyway in a few more years.
If that were not so, why are you now suffering with discs that were not injured in the accident???

Your basic problem is "bracing" and you will continue having problems until you deal with that (See the glossary.)

Then when you have done your homework, if you still have questions, write again.

Walt
