difference between angina and stress?

Posted by michele [2503.2969] on July 17, 2007 at 13:28:29:

Actually, what is the difference between "angina" and an anxiety
attack?

Dr. Stoll mentioned below that Penny may be suffering from angina;
and my one friend says she "get's angina" but it sounds so much like
the run of the mill anxiety attack; what is the difference? How is each
treated differently if there is a difference?

Hi Michelle,

Sorry no info here. I'm trying to figure this out myself. I just noticed your post after I put mine up. Is angina just any kind of chest pain or specifically heart related chest pain?

Not sure

My girlfriend said she has angina. Another person I know with the
same exact symptoms claims it is anxiety attacks.

Not sure which is correct or, if they both are. I have the run of the mill
anxiety, nothing fancy LOL

Michele, here is a definition I found of angina and the source of the definition.
(Angina Pectoris) Pain or discomfort due to lack of oxygen to the heart muscle. May manifest as pain or discomfort, heaviness, tightness, pressure or burning, numbness aching, tingling in the chest, back, neck, throat, jaw or arms.
www.daytonhearthospital.com/d2-health1.html

The way I see it, remember the overlapping circles in school... One circle would be one thing, the other circle would be another and then there's the intersection. I see there being a circle of people with angina and a circle of people with anxiety and then the overlap, those people with both anxiety and angina...there would be no causation implied. Some of the people in the intersection would have angina as a result of the anxiety, while others would have anxiety as a result of the angina and even others would have both without them being caused by or related to the other.

See what I mean?

Hey, everybody.

Listen to Anita. Angina Pectoris simply means "chest pain" which doesn't help much. However, medically, this term has come to mean a specific diagnosis: caused by a lack of blood supply to the heart muscle--a life-threatening condition which can only be certainly diagnosed by a physician or by death & autopsy.

Anxiety can cause identical symptoms and must be differentiated medically--and not always accurately!

Hope this helps.

Walt
