Hemorrhoid or just irritation?

Hi,

I just wanted to ask you a quick question. I have checked all over the place online (and as thorough a search as I could on a website) and still haven't been able to find anything definitive. I am going in for a Double Contrast BE tomorrow and have had to do the nasty Colyte prep today (including 4 5mg Dulcolax pills). During the prep I noticed some significant anal irritation (as is expected with such copious amounts of liquid stool) and something else odd. I noticed a little lump protruding from the sphincter on the right side. I was able to push it back in, but each time I used the facilities it would protrude again and I would have to reinsert it. I had my wife take a quick look-see to find out what was going on and we discovered two small roundish deep blue (almost bruised) protrusions which I assume are hemorrhoids. Now, I've never had problems with hemorrhoids every before, I'm in my early 20s and the only strange thing I've ever noticed is a very slight increase in size in the same area when I was around 15 although not painful and certainly not very notable. My question is this...does this sound like the kind of hemorrhoid that I will be stuck with until the next life, or will it likely subside having been only related to the irritation experienced from the Colyte? Any input would be wonderful!

P.S., the DCBE is for LLQ pain in the upper pelvic region very close to the hip-bone. I also have a medium-sized left sided inguinal hernia which is to be operated on in about two months at the Shouldice Clinic after I lose roughly 25lbs. The DCBE is significant as the LLQ pain has been accompanied by alternating diarrhea & constipation as well as some distention and small (flattened, ribbon-like or sometimes even pellet-like) stool (although not consistently small, only intermittently). Once again, thank-you for your time.

Not a Dr. but sounds like a thrombosed hemorrhoid...msg

which means that the hemm has increased in size with blood (its like a blood clot) I believe everyone is suseptible to hemm's though only some people are actually effected by them. I had one a few times and I'm 32. All you can really do is take warm sitz baths; I added some epsom salts and ultimately the hemm will decrease in size but for me it took a week or longer. Mine were very painful; by the sound of it, it doesn't sound like your uncomforable right now which is good. I've also applied ice bags - put it between my legs when resting which helped with the pain and helped to shrink it. Adding fiber to your diet will help with this situation but for now its a waiting game until your hemm goes down.
Good luck!

Hi, Behrooz.

I am glad that you are getting the BE. If it does not show the cause of your symptoms (depending on your age, probably diverticulosis) you really need to progress to a colonoscopy--which would entail even more harsh laxatives!

After each BM you need to do what you have been doing: pushing the lumps back up in beyond the anal sphincter.

These are typical hemorrhoids, and you can learn more about them from the archives. Your description makes me concerned that they could easily become "thrombosed" and then they could quickly swell as big as a walnut or even larger. This would require hot compresses and surgical decompression (removal of the clot) under a local anesthesia in the doc's office.

All this is reversable with the information in the archives.

Let us know what you learn from your BE.

Walt
