Hemorrhoids without constipation or straining

I have what looks like an external (thrombosed?) hemorrhoid. Excruciatingly painful. I want to figure out how to fix this one, and more importantly, prevent a recurrence.

No, more fiber in my diet is not the answer for me: I already eat about 40-50g of fiber/day. I drink more than a 1/2 gallon of water every day. I am not in the least constipated. I have frequent (practically every day) and easy BMs, or at least I did before this hemorrhoid arrived.

I am a 44 y.o. caucasian male. 5'-6", 125 lb., and fit (I exercise 6 times/wk). My blood pressure is very low: 90/60. I have never smoked and I don't take caffeine in any form. I drink 2-4 oz. of bourbon per week. I used to suffer from severe esophageal reflux, but this went away when I quit caffeine 3 years ago.

I have had hemorrhoid problems since I was 27. They all resolved themselves without medical intervention, until a year ago, when I had a painful internal hemorrhoid that required a visit to a specialist, and ultimately a ligation.

Upon first seeing me, the specialist prescribed soaking and increasing the amount of fiber in my diet to 30 g/d. (At the time I already ate a lot of fruits and vegetables (salads); I estimate I was already eating at least 15 g of fiber per day.) I stressed to this doctor that I had not been constipated in years, and that I had easy BMs practically every day. He insisted that I must have "strained at stool" at some point. I complied with his directives, but I thought he was far off the mark.

At the time I also told him the only clue I had about the source of my hemorrhoid: I had noticed for the first time around then that whenever I took a walk longer than 10-15 minutes my anus would itch in a manner reminiscent of a hemorrhoids flare up. (My doctor dismissed this as the result of small amounts of high-alkalinity fluid seeping out from my rectum.)

The present episode began last Tuesday evening, as I was starting to shop for groceries, not while straining at anything. By the time I made it to the checkout counter I could walk only with a lot of pain. That day I had done a lot of walking (doing errands), not an entirely unusual amount, but enough to occasionally bring on the itching I mentioned above. (Since Tuesday evening I have been soaking 3x/day for at least 10 min at a time, but I have noticed no improvement at all.)

My questions are: what could be the cause of my hemorrhoids, and how can I prevent them? I am prepared to undergo the ordeal of a hemorrhoidectomy, but I want to know how to avoid them in the future.

Thank you very much!

Hi Kynne, I remember a Naturepath/chiropractor once told my husband that hemorrhoids can also be the result of the liver needing to be detoxed. Have you thought about doing the liver/gallbladder flush. This flush gives you diareea so it can be hard on the bottom. Another suggestion would be to try the Livertone that SHAPE posts about to build up the liver.

Have you seen a Naturepath for this problem?

I heard rebounding might help hemmeroids.

I just bought a rebounder for myself and a friend of mine (whom has hemmeroids and other issues).

Also this same friend says she Never has had constipation and goes to the bathroom #2 a few times a day and it comes out quick in like a few seconds. Sorry for the details but I also read the constipation deal and my friend doesnt have this either.

oh I talked about rebounding; I missed the part where you are working out 6x a week. Not sure if rebounding would help much more then what you are already doing.

Hi, Kynn.

This pattern is typical of bracing of that part of the levator ani that controls the anal sphincter. See the hemorrhoids archives.

I had the same problem, apparently MUCH worse than yours, and not only resolved my hemorrhoids without surgery--within 6 months--but have not ever had a trace of them return for more than 20 years.

Let us know what you learn and how you do. With an exercise program like yours, adding the SR will give remarkable results in every phase of your health while eliminating your hemorrhoids. You will come to thank them for forcing you to learn about SR.

A book I have about trigger points also suggests what Walt said about muscle bracing. I was surprised to read that bracing could produce hemorrhoids. The book gives some manual massage techniques but they are internal.
