Dear Dr. Stoll:
It seems that after years of suffering, I am faced with having to surgically remove a LARGE Class 1 hemorrhoid.
The general surgeon wants to use a cutting/coagulator to do the job because the hemorrhoid is too large to band. This procedure entails a painful 4-6 week recovery and before I submit to it as my last option, I was wondering about alternative techniques and their success rates. I understand that injection and cryo-therapy can be options.
I am also worried about bowel perforation using electro-cautery. Can you offer any suggestions please?

Hi, Ken.
I, too, was taught that surgery was the only answer for severe hemorrhoids. However after I had scrubbed on many hemorrhoidectomies and seen how terrible the post-op period was, when I got mine I knew I would have to find another way.
Mine were so severe that I was in the ER several times a year for thrombosed hemorrhoids that had to be opened.
My story about this is in the hemorrhoid archives.
Let us know what you learn.

I had a surgery almost 6 years ago and recovery was extremely painful, having BM felt like I was giving birth.
It took about 2 or 3 months before everything was back to normal but I haven't had a single problem with hemoroids since. Before the surgery I had a lot of bleeding every time I had BM and a lot of times just when I was standing
and they were huge and painful. For me the post surgery pain was worth it as I haven't had a single eposode of bleeding and no pain at all. It's wonderful!

Walt's story isn't in the archives, however I found this for you. Good luck with your problem.

Hi, Wilma.
Your "dizzyness and weakness" is psychological and NOT related to blood loss other than many people have these symptoms at the very sight of blood---even when it is not their own!
Next, that is not to say that your chronic blood loss is not important, IT IS! Blood loss like this is insidious and can add up to quite a lot in the long run.
You need to get rid of the hemorrhoids! That is not so hard as you might think. In the meantime, you DO need to at least replace the iron you are losing.
Hemorrhoids are caused by habitual rectal muscle bracing and poor bowel habits (in that order). Look at the archives for interstitial cystitis and for prostatosis for the mechanisms for this process.
Look at the protocol on the FAQ about constipation to deal with the sheering forces that would keep this going----whether you have constipation or not.
You should stop bleeding within about 3 months of combining the SR with the MO and psyllium keeping your stools soft and easy to move. The docs who made your diagnosis should have told you all this stuff. Just making the diagnosis, and taking the money and running, is NOT being a physician--it is being a technician.
Let us know how you do and, if you still have questions after doing your homework above, write again.
See the glossry for any unfamiliar terms. THEN, as you get well, please share your experiences with the BB. Many others have your same problem and are getting the same sloppy service by the conventional medical monopoly. They deserve to know how to help themselves as well.

Right, Night Owl.
That is what I knew I had to avoid even though every one I saw about them said they were nearly the worst case they had ever seen and surgery was my option.
Juat by practicing serious wellness they all disappeared within 6 months and they have never recurred! That, too, was "wonderful"!

Thanks, forKen.
I did not realize that it would be hard to find. It is the first response to dstone on 7/24/02 in the archives.
Hope this helps.
