I read through the archives before posting this question about fissures and did not find any information to assist me with helping me to understand my issue any better.
I am 31 years old and have been suffering from hemmorhoids for about a year now. Have gone to my internist about four times over the year and each time he checked it out, confirmed the hemm's and put me on an internal supp. for a few weeks as well as sitz baths twice a day until they cleared up. I thought that pain was bad until about a month ago I began waking up in the middle of the night in a sweat, in so much pain that it took my breath away..it soon turned into "all day" not just nighttime. Called my internist crying in pain on a Sunday and he mentioned that by my description I probably have a fissure and prescribed more of the same suppositories. They did not even touch the pain and no healing seemed to be taking place. The last time I called him, he referred me to a surgeon who specializes in the Colon. After too many days of awful pain (and I have a very high tolerance to pain) I called the surgeon; cried all the way there; hardly able to sit in my car, cried all through our consultation (to know me, you would be shocked if you saw me even shed a tear). He diagnosed me again with "fissures", swabbed some numbing solution with a q-tip in my rectum (which didn't work by the way) and put me on Nifedip/Lido/Ntg Suppositories as well as a strict diet. I finally began to feel better.
I ran out of the prescription so figured I would see how I did without the supp's. I lasted three days; on day three I had a bowel movement that almost seemed to burn, saw some bright red blood yet again, and was back to the whole cycle of pain. I have since re-newed my prescription. Am I going to have to be on this for the rest of my life or is this something that will ultimately go away? I've heard of optional surgeries to fix these types of things but I would use that as an absolute last resort. I'm also wondering if I will be ill effected with all this if I decide to have a baby some day.
Thanks very much and I apologize for the lengthy message..there didn't seem to be a good way to shorten it any.

Hi, Scout.
A pregnancy WILL put more strain on this area SO, it behooves you to resolve it and maintain what you did to resolve it during any pregnancy.
See the archives about chronic constipation since ALL hard stools must be prevented for at least a month to heal a fissure.
Both fissures and hemorrhoids are also caused (contributed to) by rectal bracing so you also need to read the bracing and hemorrhoids archives.
Let us know how you do.
