Dr. Stoll,
I have been reading a lot on the internet lately about herpes zoster and other more serious herpes type infections. The reason is I have had herpes for about 2 years now. While I initially got the first bad outbreak genitally, I soon also had it orally. I only got one outbreak of cold sores on my lips though, and they were oddly two spots on the bottom of my lips (think vampire looking spots where the fangs would hang over the lips, that's where I got them.) I never again got outbreaks on my lips, but in the same two spots under my lips, same width apart, very uniform, and then lower again about an inch or so under my lips. Now the infection has gradually spread with each outbreak to my upper lips and now has settled just under my nose. I've got tiny blisters which don't really look like cold sores, not as bright or red, but I think this is because I have been rubbing a liquid lysine on them and taking perscriptions of acyclovir. Now I've got the infection spreading almost to the tip of my nose, and am very worried about this. It's not acne, and always looks very uniform I'll get two the same width apart as though they are on nerve tracks or something, and then a bigger patch on the side here or there. The doctor I recently saw seemed to not think they are herpes, but I can feel an extreme tingle all the time around my nose, lips, chin and upper lips. It's very annoying and I am constanly scrunching my nose and face from the itch and tingle of it. This is why I think it's herpes, the tingle, and the persistance and wierd way the sores ooze the clear fluid, even though they are tiny and aren't bright red. I've had this gradually spreading for the last many outbreaks, but especially in the last three months it's gotten worse. My point being: is this odd to have such a persistance herpes infection and how common is it to have cold sores OFF the lips? Could this be something besides herpes, possibly shingles? I did have chicken pox three times growing up and have heard shingles could do this too, but the are usually brighter red. They are lightly colored and sort of crusted over, when I've accidently opened one by wiping my face it does ooze and blister up like the herpes sore does. Very concerned with this. Worried it could spread up my nose to my eyes, etc. Any suggestions, or more important thoughts on if you've heard this happening to others? I am only 24 but I am under constant stress on the job, therefore the constant outbreaks. Though I don't seem to get them genitally, just around my mouth & under my nose, but not on the lips. Normal? Something other than herpes, would I still feel all this tingling? Thanks, I know this is a long message. Any opinion would be appreciated greatly. I'm at a loss on this and the doctors I've seen don't seem to have a clue. I tell them I think I've got herpes under my nose and they think I'm crazy (it does sound odd) and aren't very willing to do more checks or take it seriously. Have a great day.

You can have herpes ANYWHERE there is a nerve; i.e. anywhere on your body. Another common location for outbreaks besides the lips and genitalia is INSIDE the mouth, which many people do not know about. Herpes in the eye can damage the cornea, ultimately requiring corneal transplant in some individuals.

Hi, Micole.
Can be anywhere! The most common, by far, is around the mouth and genitals.
Herpes Zoster and Herpes Simplex are two tOTALLY different conditions! They were assigned the similar names only because the lesions looked similar!
See the herpes simplex archives for the most reliable way to get rid of that kind (which is what you have).
