Knowing nothing about cold sores, I kissed my girlfriend who had a cold sore and then contracted the herpes virus, but got it real bad. My whole mouth was inflamed and I developed stomatitis for 2 weeks. I was sick just before this, so I'm assuming that's why I got it so bad. After reading the archives I have a few questions.
1) I am now taking 2000 mg of lysine per day to prevent another outbreak. Is there any long term danger doing this?
2) For the most part I eat a whole foods diet with very little sugar, but once a week I like to drink a cola or have some chocolate chip cookies. Is indulging once a week with foods containing arginine and/or sugar going to cause an outbreak?
3) I have these chocolate protein bars with practically no sugar and a good lysine to arginine ratio. Is the high lysine content enough to block the problems caused by the chocolate? It does contain cocoa powder, but has almost no added sugar.
4) AFter I got better from the primary infection, I now have these little tiny white spots on my lips. To me they look like herpes ready to attack, as soon as my resistance goes down. Am I correct in thinking that?
5) Does the sugar in 100% natural fruit juice reduce immunity as well?
6) Is it safe to go to the beach as long as I use sunblock on my lips?
7) Are there people who have herpes I, that eat lots of arginine and do not suffer from outbreaks?
8) Is it estimated that 50-80% of the American population have herpes I, yet I rarely see people with cold sores on their lips or face. Is this an accurate number?
9) Many websites say to avoid cola, but what is the exact problem with it? I would think any kind of soda should be avoided, or is there something specifically in cola that causes outbreaks?
I exercise, meditate, and now take plenty of vitamins, especially C, to hopefully prevent an outbreak.
Thanks for your time.

Hi, Stomatitis.
Your first herpes infestatin commonly is like this but you will never have another that bad.
In order:
1. No.
2. Probably not.
3. Probably not a problem.
4. Yep.
5. Yes.
6. Sunlight is never totally "safe" but the sunblock will help. A big floppy hat will help more.
7. Yes, Genetic.
8. The virus lives inside the cells of the entire body once you have had your first infestation--for the rest of your life. They only break out when the immunity goes down either generally or locally. That is why most people do not show lesions even though their cells are lousy with the virus.
9. So fara as I know, the sugar in colas is the only ingredient that reduces immunity.
Hope this helps.
