I checked the archives for cold sores and got a lot of information on canker sores (which I gather are NOT the same as cold sores.) Is the glycerin/peroxide treatment the same for cold sores? Typically, I get one a year (in the exact same spot every time on the upper left "point" of my upper lip -- fewer lately --- and always related to stress.
What do I do? Break it and disinfect? Paint with tea-tree oil, cortisone, neosporin or peroxide?
It hurts, looks awful, makes me feel even MORE stressed etc.
Also, it's dry and wintry here (Chicago) so I am using a lip balm (Carmex) with eucalyptus. Do I need to throw it out after the cold sore is gone? What about lipstick?
Thanks for all your great insights!

There's no cure. I take 4,000-5,000 mg lysine a day (in 2-3 doses) when I get them. It's worked very fast for me. There's a turquoise/white bottle called SuperLysine Plus that I think works best.
Sometimes I put a little baking soda on it and it dries it up pretty fast and relieves pain. Wet the blister then apply baking soda with a q-tip. It will dry and be cake-like.

I wonder if I can use my lip balms and lipsticks after I've gotten rid of this infection (of course it seems like that will never happen)?
How long does the virus live in wax/oil mixtures?
Thanks for the tip on Lysine.
Also, if the goal is to dry it up, wouldn't peroxide/glycerin that Dr.Stoll recommends for canker sores work even better than baking soda? Pain is subsiding fortunately.

For cold sores on my lips I use an acne cleanser which
dries them up fast. Any sores inside my mouth I dry them
and apply peroxide and keep them dry as long as possible
after and if i can puff out my cheek to delay contact I do
that for a while and they heal right up and the puffing
seems to reduce the pressure of the sore against teeth or
gums and helps reduce pain till it heals.

I used to work for a health/vitamin company. They recommended L-Lysine to prevent outbreaks. It can be found at your local pharmacy.

You mentioned that you would like to know whether you should throw away your lipstick, etc. after you have used it on a cold sore. I have found that if you sterilize the lipstick with an alcohol wipe, it removes the cold sore germs. This, of course, is not the case with mascara, etc., since that would be impossible and you should throw it away if you have an eyelash infection. Hope this helps - it did me.

Hi,
I to used to get a lot of cold sores until I thought that the cheap lipstick I was wearing all the time could be encouraging break outs. I switched to Revlon (about $10 a tube)over 4 or 5 years ago and have not had a cold sore since. *knock on wood*...perhaps this could be your problem to...especially if you have switched lipstick brands before the break out.

Thanks to all for the advice. I didn't change lipstick (using same lip balm I've used for eons). I will try the alcohol disinfection for the lipstick/lipbalms!
Thanks for the acne medication and peroxide suggestions. I will try them (although I've noticed a benzoyl peroxide acne medication specifically says not to use it on the lips -- I've already applied it and will try my best to keep it out of my mouth (wash it off before eating for example). Seems like the viruses will die if they dry up so this makes sense to me.

Hi, Edie.
This is NOT a canker sore but a classical Herpes Simplex Type 1 blister. This is only related to Herpes Simplex Type 2 (genital) by name and appearance of the virus and the lesions.
You might try taking at least 1000 milligrams of lysine twice daily and avoid stuff with arginine in it (see your reference librarian for a book with amino acid content of foods in it.
Finally, this is one of the things that a wellness program will greatly reduce episodes of recurrence in about a year. Of course, you would have reaped enough other benefits, before then, that you will come to bless the herpes for getting you to do it.
See the glossary for any unfamiliar terms.
Let us know how you do.

L-Lysine really works I used to get 2 a year. They can be painful. I took 3 tablets (500 mg each) three times a day. When you feel stressed or get over a cold or other illness just take the lysine as a precautionary step because after sickness your immune system is weak and you can get one.
Also when out in the sun wear spf on your lips. The sun is a major cause of outbreaks.
I would throw out my toothbrush after an outbreak (worth the 2 or 3 dollars not to become reinfected.) Also have your own toothpaste and use cups with your mouthwash so as not to infect other family members.
Also using ice at the first tingle or sensation on the hour for three minutes or so helps.
As for the lipstick i would not buy "cheap" lipstick or makeup either. And disinfecting the lipstick after is a great idea. good luck as you can see i did my research when i got my first one a few years ago> they are dreadful. fortunately i don't get them often. Lysine really helps.
Stress plays a major role also.
