Hiatal Hernia

After reading some information re this problem, my husband tried the ginger root remedy as one person suggested. It does work as a relief factor, but does not completely alleviate the problem. Quick movement causes it to flare up again. Should my husband decide to have surgery, is there any Dr. or clinic that has perfected doing the surgery without major cutting, i.e. telescopic instruments as in heart surgery? Any help you can suggest or provide would be most thankfully appreciated.

I had the Nissen Fundlopacation (sp?) in February. My father died in 94 with esophageal cancer, secondary from GRD and Barrett's Esophagus, so the doctor recommended I have the procedure. I'd had GRD and Barrett's Esophagus for aprox. 4 years and on Previcid every day. I heard some really scary things about the surgery, but figured it was safer than the 10% of Barretts patients contracting cancer! I must say, it was the best thing I've ever done! My surgeon did it entirely through laparascope and I only have 3 tiny scars. I was rehabed in only a few days and back at work! I have been meds free and reflux free with no symptoms AT ALL since February!! I warn you though, it's very hard to drink/eat for a few weeks after the procedure. You must just have patience and like soup!
If you want any more info, I'll be glad to tell you what I can. My email is tjtammy@bellsouth.net. I live in Atlanta, so I don't know about any doctors other than mine, but if you want any more details, I'll tell you what I can. Good luck!

Hi, Michelle.

In spite of T. Roberts unusual experience, I would put surgery at the bottom of MY list of solutions. I would put dealing with my LGS first.

I was seriously considering surgery as I was miserable with GERD. Then I did the ginger juice thing and really focused on SR. For the past few months, I have been doing extremely well and surgery is no longer on my radar screen.

Give some of the treatments advocated on this site a try before going the drastric route of surgery.
