Can You Guess the World WideTop Selling Prescription?

Hi everyone-

I though you might enjoy knowing this too...

Misty.

Is the world wide top selling prescription drug: estrogen, viagra or prilosec?

According to Business Week, Prilosec is the top selling prescription drug in the world! It earns Astra Zeneca, the drug's maker, 6 billion dollars per year! For it to do that, it must work wonders, right?

Wrong!

Many patients currently taking the newest and most expensive heartburn drugs are dissatisfied with the results, a new study reports. Researchers perfomed an online study of 4,200 patients on drugs such as prilosec and prevacid and found:

35%-41% continue to experience daily heartburn symptoms.
60% reported experiencing symptoms 3 or more times per week.
75% also take nonprescription drugs such as pepcid, maalox and tums!

So, how is it, that this is the most widely sold prescription in the world, if it does not work well? These new heartburn drugs are heavily promoted by the drug companies through advertising. So people are not satisfied with the results of these expensive drugs but simply through the use of advertising these drugs are making the drug companies a fortune.

To add insult to injury, these drugs are rarely if ever indicated for the common ulcer and they are asociated with stomach problems!!

What is wrong with this picture?

How about this: people have been sold the idea (literally) that hearburn is an event, a symptom, to be treated with another event, a drug. Yet, we only ever lose or regain our health as the result of a process, such as: improving our diet, drinking more water, reducing stress levels, getting more sleep, etc...

Join us here on searching-alternatives to discuss and explore the healing process!

The study mentioned above was commissioned by a group of drug manufactures and conducted by Acuity and Harris interactive.

I guessed wrong. :)

It's fascinating to see the numbers on how poorly these acid blockers & squelchers actually work. Perhaps not so surprising.

People have been sold on the idea that that acid-y feeling is the enemy.....when actually it's the messenger desperately screaming to get their attention

But noooooooo.... nuke 'im with Nexium, pummel 'im with Prevacid! (then eat your sausages & pizza worry-free....)

If you're gonna be in the pop-a-pill mindset anyway, you'd at least be better off using some HCl while you get the rest of your act together. (Being "acid-free" would mean that absorption of nutrients is made that much more difficult, which would doubtless have negative consequences...)

When I was first learning about this, I went into a pharmacy and asked for some hydrochloric acid for my heartburn. They had never heard of this, and just to see the look on the faces was priceless :)

Some individuals, especially those over 40, do not manufacture enough stomach acid, so that taking some additional acid, in the form of betaine hydrochloride capsules, does actually aid their digestion.

As to how insufficient stomach acid may lead to the feeling of heartburn, I leave it up to someone with more biological understanding than I, but apparently it is so. Worked for me.

"Worked for me" - uh, that is, treating it with HCl did. (oh well, it's the thought that counts :) )
