Hiatus hernia

I have a health problem that has plagued me openly for the last 17 plus years. Just over 17 years ago I was at a wedding and some food refused to go into my stomache. I thought I was choking and so did others as it happened suddenly and was new to me. The condidtion is such that any food not well chewed to virtual liquid is capable of plugging the pipe to my stomach. I used to be able to sometime force it down with water but now if I try that it shoots back and I can't control the reaction. A chiropractor that I frequent has attempted to pull it down in some maneuver that he names and this has caused a change in that I plug up even easier and the fear of gagging and choking are not easy to control. Is this a hiatus hernia? or some other malady? Several times I have gone to the emergency at the hospital when after days it won't clear, the doctors there invariably force a camera down my throat and that clears the obstruction. Once there was a GI there and he counseled me to have the area stretched, so I tried it. To no avail. Other than having a tender esophagus for a couple of weeks, nothing really changed. A woman I've met has this even more severe than myself and has had the stretching so much that they refuse to do it any more and her condition is totally unimproved.I would like to find a cure for this as it is causing me fear of eating and particularly in public. Any new davice would be GREATLY appreciated. Les

Hi, Les.

The technical name for what you have is "cardiospasm". It is totally caused by accumulation of stress-effect and is directly related to LGS. See the glossary for any unfamiliar terms and then go to the home page articles and then the archives if you still need to learn your options.

If you have any doubts, the current 2/24 special issue of Newsweek might change your mind.

Listen to Annie for temporary relief.

Let us know what you learn and how you do.

Walt
