HH and oesophagal ulcers

hello,
i was recently diagnosed with a hh and ulcers in the oesophagus (i had an endoscope). I am an extrememly fit and athletic 36 year old, and am a pro dancer and acrobat. and never ill with a pretty healthy diet. i spend alot of time upside down and throwing myself about, i always seem to be robust and do not have a history of heartburn or even indigestion. I also do loads of relaxation and yoga and am completely surprised by this. Also i play saxophone, which i guess puts pressure on the stomach - but i would have thought this would have strengthened the muscles. Is it possible that the hh is caused by a pull rather than bad diet? My doctor is also a bit baffled. Also now the damage is done, do you think going upside down and doing intense exercise is going to prevent repair? Also, i havnt been able to ascertain from reading the posts if hh can heal themselves or do you just deal with it? thankyou very much for runnng this website. jane P

Why did you have the endoscope?

i had the endoscope because i had severe pain behind the breastbone, couldnt eat or drink and hurt on deep breaths, it came on quite suddenly in the night and the doctors first thought was i had a fishbone stuck and he was going to get it out. I havnt eaten solids now for 5 days, and am taking prescribed meds at night. When the pain started, i was training alot that week (on ropes in the air), and due to being tired i went to bed early after eating a medium sized meal (salad and fishcakes).

I’m not a doc, so I don't know what is causing your pain. I wouldn’t presume to guess. It could be something physical, muscular or nerve, connected to your physical activity, but what I want to share with you is that the anomalies your doc found aren’t necessarily behind the symptoms you experience. This I know because I have been scoped and told the same as you. What I experienced is not exactly the same as you. I have resolved the symptoms, mainly through, skilled relaxation. I still have the HH and the evidence of GERD damage, but no pain anymore.

It is good you do “loads of relaxation”. I urge you to do some research into "skilled" relaxation. Resolving stress related bracing is tricky business, subtle and beneath the threshold of consciousness (until you are experienced). Simple rest will not do it. It will be worth your time if you find no other causes. And I urge you in the strongest possible terms to do anything you can to avoid going down that medication road so common to conventional medicine practice. Acid suppressors and smooth muscle relaxers are a dead end leading to worse symptoms. This is just my experience.

Good Luck.

thanks Jim,
i'm pretty sure the pain is from the ulcers as they looked pretty nasty, do you know how long they take to go away if i'm really careful? (for example i'm on liquids only ie rice milk/milk/miso soup/nutrient drinks/calming teas).
and when the actual ulcers go away, is there usually pain from the hh by itself?
And i dont know yet if hh can heal itself back to normality or do we just learn to live with it? I know i'm going to have to transform quite alot in my life which at the moment seems like a mountain. I am a bit worried though that the acrobatics is'nt going to help and i am upside down alot! Are you a sports person by any chance? I know i've been leading a more stressful than i'm used to life for the past 3 years, due to actually being quite successful. thanks for the advice anyway. JP

Thanks, Jane P.

I, too, am surprised that you would have this but you must have been born whth a genetic susceptibility in the area that your healthy lifestyle was unable to overcome--especially since you "spend so much of your time upsidedown".

My first guess is that you do not have to change anything except checking the effectiveness of your relaxation techniques with biofeedback, and learning about what LGS is.

Using the GRJ in the meantime might help your symptoms until you can get the rest of this done.

Walt

thankyou Walt,
10 days on and i'm feeling pretty much ok now (taking the proton pumpers), and after a week of soya/rice milk/miso i have begun to eat soft solids (the first that went down well was smoked salmon!), i've also not done any hard training, but have been doing gentle yoga, breathing and chi gung and walking. Someone suggested another possible reason, please tell me what you think - i was on a weeks course of antibiotics and my problems started on the last day of the course, that day i had been training hard, and went to bed early at 9pm, then at 11pm i remembered i hadnt taken my capsule so took it in bed, just leaning up and took it with just a sip of water. Do you think theres a chance that the capsule opened in my oesophagus and made the ulcers?
This week has given me the chance to research alot on diet, and i'm getting onto the ginger - so far i have ginger root capsules that i make into tea. And stopping dead on coffee has probably done me the world of good!
thanks again, i'll look into your other methods.
jane P
