I was told I have a very small hiatal hernia that is causing gerd. I tried all the ppi drugs and got bad side effects from some of them .I never had heartburn until i started using these drugs. I had a sore throat and that's how i found out i had gerd. Prevacid worked but the others did not. When my health plan said i could no longer use the prevacid that it cost them to much. I was put on nexium. It just made me get heartburn 24/7. So the doctor gave me samples of prtonix and i brought them home and put them in the cupboard. No more pills i said and beleave it or not i fill some what better. My friend told me to try deglycyrrhizinated licorice root extract in tablet form. I seen DR. Stolls web site and found it informing. I think I'll try the ginger juice. And order the book to get more information on gerd and hiatal hernia. Any feed back will be helpful.

Hi Terry,
It is possible that you had a virus such as shingles
which affected your LES operation... It may have run its' course and you are now getting control of that valve back
again.
About half the population has a slight hiatal hernnia
which is very difficult to detect even with endoscopy or barium swallow.
How did you develop gerd in the first place? Was it some injury to the chest, a car accident where whiplash was involved, strenuous exercise or lifting at work or
ab-crunches? Anything that causes great pressure of the diaphragm such as violent throwing up due to food poisoning, dry heaves, or even many episodes of chronic constipation
can be the cause.
Be glad that you are getting better. Many are not so lucky.
If you want to calm the acid that seems to get up into the esophagus, ask about chewable Gaviscon at your local drug store. It is a bit like pepto bismol in covering the
acid. Just take one or two if eating has caused trouble.
Have you been to heartburn-help?
Ron

I, also, had/have h. hernia. M.D.&endoscopy did not diagnose I could just feel it. Dr. knew I had reflux/gerd & prescribed Prevacid-Took for a while and then switched over to cayenne p (capsules) Cayenne actually stopped an attack that I had about 2AM-Told the Dr & she said if it works, take it (was going to anyway)-Did the ginger jc for 2 wks-
self-manipulation; and a chiropractor who does Kinesiology.
I am MUCH BETTER-stomach/diaphragm area softer-Vince is right about cayenne and Ron is usually right about many things. Good Luck

I had shingles when i was around 19 years old. I am now 38.
I had gotten a sore throat in December of last year and got meds for it. It never got better. Got all the test done for gerd and they found the hiatal hernia. The only thing I can think caused it would be working out on a gym I bought six months before. I called the doctor who done the scope and he said it was very small. I still get the heart burn but it is very light. And if i don't watch what i eat i get it in my throat a little. I don't like taking pills and would like to look at natural healing on this.

Tell me how you did your self manipulation-i have the diaphram problem and stomach problem. Something is not working right-wanted tested for herpes shingles-docs wont do it. I just feel pressure up there all the time like stool and it wont come down. I am on prevacid.

Hi Dee,
If your doctors have ever said that a virus may be the cause of your gastric problem, make sure to ask them directly
about WHAT KIND OF VIRUS?..
They will have to admit that shingles is a possibility.
A test for antibody titres IGg and IGm for Herpes zoster
will show if your immunities are working hard agains this.

To make a long story short, NONE of the pills worked for me so I tried the ginger root juice for 3 weeks. Make sure you do it right and don't eat or drink anything for an hour or two afterwards, and it worked! It's been 2 years now and been meditating and watching what I eat and been fine.

I'm not so sure self manipulation is in order. Have you thought of having an endoscopy?--or pursuing Ron's sugg. of virus? Do you go to chiropractors? Maybe you should consult with Dr. Stoll, first. For some reason I feel uncomfortable about the self manipulation--But get some def. answers from Drs.

I had GERD. It started during a time when I was consuming 3 or 4 cups of coffee per day. My MD said get used to it as there are few cures. At the time I had made no correlation with coffee consumption. For other reasons (anxiety problems) I began limiting my coffee to one per day and about 6 months later I noticed my GERD was gone and has been gone for about 4 years now.

Is it any wonder why this is not advertized on TV???
