GERD: don't give up (Thanks Walt!)

Posted by rich [2939.1619] on February 23, 2005 at 20:50:51:

This is a follow up message to a post that I sent last year saying I only achieved partial symptom relief despite nearly two months on ginger juice(GJ). I actually ended up using the juice for nearly 4 months as things got much worse any time I tried to stop. By the the end of about 3 months on the GJ, I had been practising SR for 6 months and I switched to a diet emphasizing lots of fresh salad (usually with fish and beans too) for lunch. I managed to eliminate my need to take the occasional omeprazole to compliment the GJ around that time or shorlty afterwards. On advice from a naturapath (even though that's not where I normally go for medical advice), I also started a 3-way course of probiotics, a digestive aid and 'intestamine' to help improve a likely leaky gut. I dropped the GJ about a month after that, and now - another month later - am about done with the course. I have felt pretty close to 'normal' for most of the last month, which is something I haven't done for nearly three years and in fact had almost given up hope for. Hence the reason for this account; to encourage anyone else fighting GERD to not be discouraged by set-backs and to keep looking for the right changes that will restore your health. Don't believe doctors who tell you there is nothing that can be done for your condition - persist and don't lose hope, as I almost did.

Thanks for sharing your good news with us, Rich. It is
encouraging to hear indeed.

I've had GERD as well for a while and was getting fearful that even
though I had changed my diet again, it was not getting better like it
once had. But through persistence it has gotten much better for
me too. There are still times when it flares up, but reading your
story gives me more hope that it will get even better. I'm going to
continue with the GJ and hope to feel even better as more time
passes. Your message of hope is an important one. Even when
things take a while to improve, we shouldn't give up and should
continue to make positive changes. It eventually does get better.

Ted, the container I have lists it as "nutritional support for the gastrointestianl tract". It contains glutamine, N-acetyl-D-glusomine, slippery elm, aloe vera, quercitin, and apple pectin according to the ingredients. It is made in New Zealand by BioCeuticals (who I think are an Australian company). I'm not sure about availability in different regions, but you might otherwise find something comparable. Hope this is of some help. Regards.
