GERD worries...i'm freaking out!!

Posted by Seth on February 03, 1999 at 18:39:36:

Hi,

I have recently come down with bad heartburn problems. I am a bodybuilder, so the obviously my training and eating are suffering, whichs leads me to another problem... depression.

Anyways, I am freaking out about the treatments for this problem(GERD), like surgery. Can you overcome GERD without surgery? What kinds of food are best for an acidic stomach?
Can way too much eating cause GERD? Can rapid weight gain in muscle or fat cause GERD? Can this be reversed if you go easy for awhile?

I have been on a drug called Losec (doesn't really help).

Please help if you can,
Seth.

Hello Seth,

I have been suffering from GERD for over 8 months, and at times I have really lost all hope that I will ever get better. As Walt will advise you, you should start practising skilled relaxation. As for myself, I have been doing that, it has not "cured" the reflux I have, but while I am in a very relaxed state (and that comes with practice), the symptoms temporarily get much better. I have recently started a class in self-hypnosis, and I am seeing a Medical Hypnotist for this condition, because despite all of the medications I take or took (was on Propulsid, but stopped when I experienced heart arrhythmias), take 20 mg Prilosec daily), tried Prevacid before that without success, was on Ativan (anti anxiety drug) but took myself off of it, I am not back to normal. I avoid eating spicy food, tomatoes, bell peppers, greasy food, alcohol, coffee/cafeine. I recently started to take digestive enzymes before I eat. Just a few days ago I saw my Gastroenterologist, who, after all this time has passed, now thinks that I have a rare condition called Achalasia, where the stomach valve closes too tightly and keeps the acid backed up in my esophagus. He put me on Librax (anti-anxiety and muscle relaxant). With all of this said, start by taking better care off yourself mentally. Instead of doing heavy workouts I am doing Yoga these days, and enjoy the newness of this experience. If you have more questions, please contact me at Teleia_7@yahoo.com

Seth,
Have you tried the Ginger root juice yet
if not . Try it it worked for me .
Gives you temporary relief while you can start working on the causes of the problem you have
http://askwaltstollmd.com/hiatus.html
see the above on this site for instructions.
But you must look at the rest of the site in more detail to
see what is causing your problems
P.S If you cant afford a juicer use a hand held garlic press
You can work out at the same time .
My wrists are rock solid now!

Dear Seth,

Welcome to the 'site. I know you can't have been here very long since this condition is discussed nearly every day and has been for years. Go to the archives.

Listen to Teleia!!!!!!

THEN, if you still have questions, write again.

Walt

Thanks for the help!...I'll try that juice ;)

My acid problems I believe are self induced. I was eating so much food for months on end (like 5000 cals a day!)in comibination with my powerlifting and I think I really screwed up my stomach. I found out yesterday that it could be a bacterial ulcer or a specifec esophagiel hernia(loads of fun).

Anyways, thanks again!

Seth.
