Very bad Acid Reflux?

Hi,

I am 29 yrs. old. I have been to 2 different doctors, and one Digestive Disease doctor. About 3-4 years ago, when I first started going to the doctor for having a really sore throat and had a tough time sleeping, he would perscribe antibiotics a few times, and then switched to prilosec after I kept coming back with other symptoms. The doctor would look in my throat and tell me it was very pink, and that it looked like someone took a razor and peeled off a layer of skin. This doctor was in Michigan. Last year, I moved to North Carolina and started seeing another doctor. When I first came in with the same symptoms I was having in Michigan, she immediately said I should have an EGD(?) done. She also put me on Prevacid (which has worked the best for me... I have been on Prilosec, Prevacid, and Nexium). I had the EGD done, and they saw a lot of bile in my stomach. They also saw that the esophogeal sphincter was pink and irritated. The exit of the stomach was also pink and irritated.

I have been told that the only solution for me is surgery. I have been reading your message board and have tried the ginger juice (so far I am on my 6th day). I had burning so bad the other day that I had to take another prevacid, and it has helped me today. My heart also sped up for about 10 seconds and I had trouble breathing before taking the prevacid. I have had a stress test done, everything turned out fine. I have had a PH test done, and I had 247 refluxes over a 24 hour period. I have had an ultra sound done on my liver, gall bladder, and kidneys, and they all turn out fine. I am trying to stay on the ginger juice right now, and will continue until I am through 3 weeks. If I have these episodes, should I still take a prevacid, or will that be detrimental toward the ginger juice working? I also see that ginger juice is not the only answer, but am wondering if maybe there might be something else either more serious wrong with me or maybe something else is affecting me to cause the acid reflux to be magnified?

Thanks,

Frank H.

Hi, Frank H.

Yes, there IS something more serious going on. It is called LGS and your GERD is only the tip of THAT iceberg.

See the glossary for any unfamiliar terms and then use the archives until you begin to understand what is going on. In the meantime the GRJ will help your symptoms.

Let us know what you learn and how you do.

Walt

Hi, Frank. You should look into food allergies. After searching this board last year following several months of bad reflux, I had myself tested and found I was allergic to wheat, dairy and other foods. As soon as I stopped those foods (and the Nexium at the same time) my acid reflux stopped and never returned. Look in the archives for how to get tested the right way and find the right doctor (may be a naturopath). You may also find you need to TAKE HCl as I did, since low HCl as well as high HCl may cause reflux. A world-famous GI doc had me on the acid-suppressant when it was the OPPOSITE of what I needed. All the best to you.
