kidney & Hives

My 15 year-old-son started breaking out in hives that covered him from neck to ankles. He has broked out every day for the past 3 months. Went to allergy Dr. who ran some test said he had mild allergies to trees, dogs, cats, grasses, but nothing bad enough to account for the hives. Wanted to just keep him on meds. constantly.

I noticed when they had him give a urine sample that it was very dark. I started making him drink more water and by accident we found out that if he drinks at least 3 quarts of water a day he does not get hives.

My mother lost her first kidney at 22 years of age and her 2nd in her fifties. All three of my brothers and I have had some minor kidney problems.

Should I be concerned with his kidney function. Are they possibly not filtering like they should?

Hi, Laura.

At 15, his reserves should be so great that this sort of thing couldn't happen. If he is so close to the limits of his reserves, that just drinking more water does this miuch good, it will not be long before that simple expedient will no longer work. You had better tell his present doctor about this relationship!

NOW, is the time for him to make some basic decisions about his general wellness and stick to them; else his "hives" will soon seem to him to be a very minor part of the problem.

Go to the home page for this 'site and have him read about wellness so he knows what he will have to do. You both could also go to the archives and read everything you can find about chronic hives.

In the meantime, you could call a good Clinical Ecologist to find out exactly what else he could do in the meantime to slow the progression of what will be a big problem for him is he doesn't change his life-style. A good resource for finding the C.E would be their email at asem@bellatlantic.net

If you have more questions write again.

Walt
