I have been suffering from a chronic hive condition for 13 years now. It began while I was in the military in 1987. It has progressed to also include pressure urticaria (hives where there has been some sort of pressure on the skin). I was in college from 1988 until 1993, and the hives were at their worst during this time. I settled down to a routine job and lifestyle and so did the hives (although the pressure urticaria has never subsided). I switched jobs in 1998 and a year later the hives returned. Lately, they have been worse than they have ever been. My eyes have been swollen shut and I have an accompanying fever and headache, something new to the equation. I have had to miss work and feel that things might get worse than ever. I have read Dr. Stoll's book and have ordered the Stress Workout book. I have also ordered Ester-C and am investigating a no-carb diet. I was diagnosed with initial onset emphysema two years ago, so I look at this as my last resort. I have a doctor I visit regularly, but he really doesn't know much more than any of the other doctors I have seen. He says I am taking the strongest antihistamine available (Doxepin) and much of the time it keep things at bay, but there are more times that things are not good. With the increased hives I also suffer from chest pain. I guess I just want to make sure I am doing the right thing by taking this new approach. We are on a limited budget and spending this money on various items is one less prescription or one less doctor's visit. I hope it is worth it. I will repost to this list when the dust has settled. If anyone has any other suggestions I would greatly appreciate hearing from you. Thanks, Eric

Hi, Eric
Since I'm not a doctor, I'm unable to anser your questions. Never had chronic hives and can't advise you on what to do. However, I can lead you to the archives in order to review the vast amount of information contained there for hives.
Sure hope this helps and Take Care Of Yourself & Your Family
Paulette

Eric,
It is time for you to stop blindly listening to your docs!
You say "you are on the strongest antihistamine available--Doxepin". If you had read the package insert, you would know that this is NOT an antihistamine at all but an antidepressant. Whoever prescribed this KNOWS that stress is the most important component of your problem and has not been honest with you about that.
This is one reason I repeatedly recommend that no one take ANY prescribed medication without reading the package insert BEFORE buying the medication.
For now, while you are getting the package insert from the pharmacist, go to the archives about stress, brain chemistry & chronic hives.
Let us know what you learn.

Well it has been almost a month. I have began 500mg of Ester-C along with self-hypnosis. I still take the Doxepin with the hopes of one day not needing it. The self-hypnosis is coming along, but I cannot help for the life of me falling asleep during the middle of it, sometimes not waking up at all. While I do sleep better than ever, I believe I am not supposed to do this with a self-hypnosis program. If anyone can provide some pointers I would appreciate it. Also, if anyone knows where I can get a cheap mini-trampoline that information would also be greatly appreciated. Thanks for the words of encouragement. I'll check back in later.
