Dear Dr Stoll,
I am pregnant starting week 6. I started getting hives a week ago and since I can't take any medication I can treat it. Any idea why it may show up? I had them about 12 years ago and never had them since. It's unbearable!! Please let me know what should I do and if there is any direct connenction beteen the pregnancy and the re-appearence of the hives. Also, when should I exect it to disappear??
Thank you, Liv

Hi, Liv.
Hives are always a result of the autonomic nerves/glands system falling over the cliff. Pregnancy is a VERY large burden on that system. SO, if you were on the edge of having hives, it would not be a surprise for pregnancy to push you over the edge.
They MAY clear up when you deliver but just as likely could persist since the pregnancy is not the cause--only the trigger. See the glossary and archives about hives and what to DO about them.
THEN, if you have more questions, write again.
Walt
