HIVES DURING AND AFTER PREGNENACY

DEAR DR. STOLL,
AT THE BEGINNING OF MY SECOND PREGNANCY THAT STARTED IN JANUARY 1997, I STARTED TO GET HIVES. I FOUND OUT THAT IT WAS CAUSED BY THE PREGNANCY AND THEY TOLD ME IT WOULD GO AWAY AFTER I HAD DELIVERED MY BABY. I TOOK BENEDRYL, CLARITAN, ZYRTEC AND THEN PREDNISONE. PREDNISONE WORKED FOR ME BUT I WAS ALSO ON IT FROM 3/97 UNTIL 11/98. IT GAVE ME TERRIBLE DRY SKIN AND HAIR, SO I WENT OFF IT. THEN MY DR. TOLD ME THAT BECAUSE I WAS BREAST FEEDING MY HORMONE LEVEL HAD REMAINED THE SAME AND THAT WAS WHY I STILL HAD THEM. I FINISHED BREAST FEEDING AROUND 11/99, AND HERE IT IS 10/2000 AND I STILL HAVE THEM. I ALSO CAN TELL YOU THAT WHEN MY PERIOD IS COMING EVERY MONTH THEY SEEM TO GET WORSE. PLEASE HELP TO GET RID OF THEM ONCE AND FOR ALL!!!!
SINCERELY,
DAWN GRANDE

Hi, Dawn.

Listen to kmd.

You would have gotten the hives (eventually) even without the pregnancy. The pregnancy just pushed your precarious hormonal balance over the edge and NOW that you are over the edge stopping the pregnancy and nursing are not enough to get you back up on the "top of the cliff".

The way you have to address this is just like anyone else who has hives. This is why kmd's suggestions are so important.

By the way, the "all caps" format is hard to read and is considered "shouting" by regulars. Just a word to the wise.

Hope this helps.

Walt
