Re: swollen lip (Important!)

I started getting hives 2 weeks after a hysterectomy, and I am still getting hives (although not as severe), 11 weeks after that surgery. My doctor insists that there's no relation between the surgery and the hives, but I am convinced that there is. Much more disturbing than the hives however, is the swollen lips. It's happened three times now, since the surgery... I wake up with a huge swollen lip (once the lower lip and twice the upper lip). The swelling lasts about 2 days and it includes my right cheek. I also did go to the dentist (had two fillings done) a couple of days before I had the first swollen lip incident (but I had already been getting the hives for a couple of weeks prior to the dental visit). I had work done by the same dentist earlier in the year and nothing happened. What I would like to know is if there's anything I can do or take once the swelling has started. Benedryl doesn't seem to help at all nor do the steroids, tagamet, or atarax (which is what I have been prescribed). I am drinking pinaple juice and taking quercetin.

Hi, Victoria.

The chances are that the stress of your surgery was enough to push you over your immunological "cliff" and IS the proximate cause of your getting this problem somewhat sooner than you would have gotten it anyway.

The only thing I know of that might resolve this before it gets much worse is a disciplined effort at "wellness" (moving the cliff away from you). See the homepage and the archives.

In the meantime, it would be wise to change at least some of the burdens that might be contributing (taking a few steps back from the edge of your cliff). Since diet is the easiest (and quickest) thing to DO that, I would suggest TOTAL elimination of dairy from your diet for a couple of weeks and then testing yourself by having the kind of dairy you are missing the most. There will be NO DOUBT in your mind if this is contributing to your problem. Then, when you KNOW, do the same thing with wheat.

Let us know what you learn and how you do.

Walt
