hives

My daughter is 10. She just came off of a Zip Pack of Zythromyacin for possible strep. She ran a fever of 102.7 all weekend and her normal temp is 97.6. I alternated Motrin and Tylenol. Her temp is down to 98.6 and last night she broke out in hives. She has had hives before and I never found the cause. I gave her Benadryl last night and some of the hives disappeared from her leg and buttocks. She now has the hives on her left calf. How do I find the cause?

Lorrie,

Seems likely to me that the hives are from the Zithromax. Some people are sensitive to medications, especially antibiotics.

I've had all-over hives or red or purple rashes from many different antibiotics, especially penicillin, most of my life (I'm 47 now). The last (and final!) time I took antibiotics, it was after I finished a Zithromax 5-day pack for a nasty case of bacterial bronchitis. I ended up with both eyes swollen nearly shut, and extreme puffiness all around my eye sockets. It turned out to be a reaction to the Zithromax, which eventually cleared up 2 weeks later with steroidal eye drops. I won't do that again!

I hope your daughter makes a quick recovery!

Hi, Lorrie.

Listen to nutmeg.

What do you mean "possible strep"? Was not a sample taken for analysis????

Why was Zithromycin used when there are a number of safer and MUCH less expensive antibiotics even with proven strep throat? If you had read the package insert, the pharmacist is supposed to give you with every prescribed medication, you would already know that skin rash (mostly hives) are the most common adverse reaction to this antibiotic.

Hope this helps.

Personally, I think that you need a much better doc.

Walt

It makes me feel angry when doctors prescribe strong antibiotics so easily. We blindly trust doctors. I too had Z-Pack and hives along with it. But, having had so many series of antibiotics and yeast overgrowth, I realize finally that I need to know what I am doing and what I'm taking. I wish doctors are somebody we can trust... We grown-ups need to pay 200% attention to medication for kids. Let's study and learn consequence of drugs, first. I am not attacking antibiotics. Antibiotics can save life in case of emergency. This is just a common sense, but I wanted to mention it because it's just so easy to be fooled. In my case, it's taking long, long time to go back to zero and recover from antibiotics and steroid.
