birth control pills--side effects

Posted by holiday on March 22, 2003 at 08:40:51:

I had been on the pill for four years (lo-ovral) with no side effects. I stopped for several months and started again on ortho-tricyclen. With that one I had horrible side effects-weight gain(22 lbs), heavy periods, vaginial dryness, and my contact lenses always fell out. Needless to say I stopped taking it and everthing is now normal. (I lost 10 lbs within a week and a half of stopping that pill and am now back to my normal weight) Now I'm scared to try any pill. My question is was it just the ortho and another pill will not have these side effects or have I developed some sort of strange reaction to all pills? I am a bit confused because I thought that ortho had a lower amount of hormones in it than lo-ovral, which should have made it less likely to cause adverse reactions, right? Also, aren't all pills pretty much comprised of the same things, so why would one cause side effects and another one wouldn't?
Thanks in advance to any answers or thoughts.

ALL pills in that catagory will produce side effects, many will be longer term that you may not notice right away. I would also be very wary of any pill that "regulates" your body or "tricks" it into thinking it's something it is not (ie, "regulates" period, "tricks" it into thinking it's pregnant) and so on.)
I would look into alternative area's for whatever you are trying to remedy, be it pregnancy or otherwise.

Lo-overal lines your uterus so an egg can't stick. Orthotrycycline lines your uterus *and* stops you from ovulating. Therefore, the Orthotrycycline will have more hormones than the Lo-overal. You could go back to the Lo-overal, however, if you could get off them all together, you would be better off concerning your health. There are long-term side effects.

Hi, Holiday.

This is what we holistic types are talking about when we say "balance is everything". "Every person is unique." "One woman's meat is another woman's poison."

Use what fits your uniqueness if you are lucky enough to find it.

Holiday:

I wouldn't take any birth control pills. I was on them for 7 years and got breast cancer. Estrogen is listed as carcinogen. Check your pills to see if they have estrogen. Estrogen causes cancer cells to grow. That's why breast cancer patients take Tamoxifen to block estrogen.

I remember someone else posting about Ortho-Trycyclin. I think she said she lost weight and was really depressed.
