Hi again,
so i have just read the post by wildcard, that was speaking about how soy can cause cancer, or better still, does cause cancer.
Then Lincoln posted a reply telling that by altering endogenous hormone concentrations due to the intake of soy, it is feminizing men.
Ok, here is my issue. one minute someone says that it is bad for us, then, another Doctor or Nutritionist says its fine in MODERATION, then again, another person says it is great for us, and it does not make men femine by decreasing testosterone levels and increasing estrogen levels.
Whats the go.
I really dislike the fact that we consumers who want and DESIRE to look after our health, and pay more for these products, because we are fed negative information in relation to consumption of DAIRY. yes thats right, what is it, DAIRY or SOY...
Sorry if this comes across aggressive, as it is not intended to. I am just confused as to if i should start ignoring these so called DOCTORS and NUTRITIONISTS, and just listen to MYSELF.
but is that a good attitude to have, or will i, as a result by thinking this way, do more halm to my body anyway?
dave!

This is one of those things that, unless you are consuming them in large amounts, I would think the stress of worrying over it is far worse than the substances themselves. Maybe there is a Bell Curve effect on overall health on worrying about the details of food intake - concern is good to a certain extent but then you can cross a fine line into fretting and health goes downhill after you cross it.
Just a thought ...

I totally agree with KMD,
listen to your body and use everything in moderation. I have been using both, dairy and soy products and my body is fine.
Stress of worrying about everything will get us first.

Hi Dave,
Many of the tests that are being done to show that certain products may be dangerous are done on lab animals where the dosage may be hundreds of times the amount that a human might consume.
Over the last few decades we have also been told that
bacon is bad, butter is bad, coffee is bad, eggs are bad...
Now we are told that magarine is bad, bacon is ok,
eggs are fine and expensive designer coffee is being drunk in quantities that would kill lab animals.
Sometimes I think we are all being manipulated by the latest
university study that makes it to the airwaves. Maybe we are
too quick to accept some 24 year-old's thesis because
it is published as if it was gospel. Have you noticed that
most of this happens at the end of the current college year
and we get it during the early weeks of summer?
If soy is really so bad for everyone, maybe we will hear that it was all Bush's fault and that Kerry will fix it when he is elected.
Everything in moderation has been the rule for decades, and it still applies. Remember... "too much of any good thing can kill you"
A while ago, I heard that the testosterone level of the
human male was dropping rapidly due to the birth control pill residue that went down the drain and into the lakes where it gets their drinking water... Now we are being told that it is from the soy that men may be eating...
I prefer to blame the lack of male libido on the likes of Janet Reno, Hillary Clinton and the fact that so many women
are showing how much testoserone they possess. :)
If you are a real man, and don't want to risk growing man boobs, you know what to do.... Stop falling for all the
new fads and try to eat like you did when you lived with
your parents.
In the meantime, relax and enjoy the summer. So far, they have not managed to make beer with soy.

I know what you mean, Dave. It seems that everything is said to be bad for us at one time or another. Coffee, sugar, soy, dairy, lots of things. I agree that everything in moderation is good for something.
I've had no problem with soy. The nutritional supplement that I drink twice a day, every day, is soy-based and I've found nothing but good things happening with its use. I don't buy the 'soy causes cancer' thing. All of the pre-cancerous gynecological stuff that I had going on disappeared pretty quickly after I started with the nutrition.
Yes, listen to your body. They talk to us all the time.

Today something is good for you, when last yr it was the worst thing to eat or do. Is the science better or did the people who did what was Thought to be good, get sick or die?
Smokers and drinkers can live as long if not longer than anyone, so are you the one that will live long or die young? I Think it all boils down to how fearful you are and they will have you runing around like a headless chicken trying to keep up. ...Eggs are the worst things to eat...NO the Best. Margarine..No Margarine(trans fats). The older you get the more fads you see that will come and go and laugh about what they were thinking or Who Paid for the study. Still see Oat Bran now and then. I guess that is for Oat Bran supporters.
I eat and do what I want because it works or I feel better with them and look at studies to see how accurate I Think They are and if I see weakneses in the conclusions.
It won't hurt to cut down on things that are warned about and maybe increase ones that are praised but I Wouldn't go extreme on anything and if you don't like it, avoid it. I cut down on fats because I am limited in activity so think it is wise but then I don't crave them like I used to since I probably don't need or burn the calories and think it is wise to change to a degree but I am not going to worry and Not do/eat things that I want to. That would cause stress and That isn't good. If you have a problem then that might be different.

Hi Dave
this has been my experience with soy so far.
I use to drink it when I was a vegan (without any issues).
But now, my most recent experience, I wouldn't let any males close to me drink it, or consume it.
BECAUSE, first like you too,I have heard of its feminizing (sp) aspects.
SUCH as, when I was taking a soyprotein (90%) powder, AND drinking about a glass of soymilk a day, my breasts became bigger!!! I am not kidding!
AND I began getting tender lumps in my breasts.
so, off I went to my doc. for an exam. She proceeded to tell me that it was just hormonal lumps. I have never had "HORMONAL lumps)and it wasn't normal, like she was telling me.
So I did some reserach and discovered it could be soy. I then stopped all soyproducts, and lo and behold, the lumps within a week, were gone!!!
Now, that tells me there is too much oestrogen in soy for my body to handle. And if thats the case with me (and the phsycial effects), then I wouldn't want to risk that if I was a male!
Its one thing for breasts in a female to get bigger (and hormonal lumps), but what would it do to a man, I dont know.
I wouldnt be secondguessing it, and possibly putting my health at risk

being a cancer survivor, it has to be tough figuring out what to do. You could do the Really right things and then find out that something else was bad and they Just found that out, so you loose anyway.
I try to find out what does what and is good for us and if it is something simple and agreeable I may do or try it and pass things along, like wemen over 60 with osteo in their hips are said to be low in B-12, so I told my sister since she is past 60 and has some osteo. B-12 is simple and can't hurt.
Personally I feel that I'll do what I enjoy and see what happens. Maybe if I wasn't disabled I would worry more, trying to keep my health up, but maybe not since things that have helped me at times were Really frowned upon and I still hear warnings. I am single so that probably adds to me feeling that when it ends, it ends and it is frustrating having limits but still have desires. Then I recovered from a similar injury and made up for lost time so I always have hope but that only took a yr or 2 and this has been 16yrs and age is probably adding to it. I want to live as long as I will but it is no fun being frustrated by limitations so sooner could be better BUT however long it is I'll always have hope and keep searching for answers.
I have a friend who worries about everything and is on All kinds of meds. He stoped smoking and keeps gaining weight. He worries about his prostate and everything else. Gets tested and takes all the meds like statins, Celebrex, and saw palmetto and is miserable worrying he will get something and die.
Then there is my grandfather who did anything he wanted to
and smoked and made it to 104 and a hospital had to kill him so I don't think we can be sure of anything and to be miserable and worry is like hell and it could last for ages.

I choose to avoid soy, except for a little soy sauce once in a while. If I was going to eat it at all, I'd eat organic tofu or tempeh, not soy milk, soy protein, soy burgers, etc.
I feel that there are plenty of legume and other food choices available so I can do w/o soy. There are dozens - if not hundreds of different types of legumes.
If soy was all I had to eat, than I'd have to eat it, and would. That's how I feel about it.

Hi Sedona,
Maybe it is all those downtown condos with the yuppies that have their Navigator in the UG parking.
They must need that kind of vehicle to drive to the cottage every weekend.
I would prefer that all business deliveries were done between 11:00 PM and 6:00AM as has been done in New York
for many years. It is all the traffic jams that are caused by parking in the curb lane or double parking to deliver
a package to the 20th floor that causes the congestion.
Many years ago, Toronto was covered with Streetcar Tracks
and Trolley Bus wires...
It was silent, non polluting, and efficient even when snow
was too deep. The streetcars never got stuck but the cost of track replacement and maintenace and labour to keep it all running was called wasteful. Also the clutter of all the overhead wires made downtown look like Chicago in the
30's. That had to go, or all the real estate development would suffer.
http://world.nycsubway.org/canada/toronto/
The environmentalists were also against the steetcars because they were getting their bicycle wheels stuck in the tracks and falling.
We now have very few streetcar lines left and they are complaining about why there are so many cars downtown.
Aren't universites wonderful?

Everything in moderation has been the rule for decades, and it still applies. Remember... "too much of any good thing can kill you"
This is good in theory, but the real question is: what is moderate for a particular food? For example, up to 1/4 lb butter a day is moderate enough for me, but one or two apples or one or two watermelon pieces will screw up my digestion/elimination systems, but WOW can eat a ton of fruits and still think it's too little, but she can't handle as much butter. So, is there a practical general "moderation" rule? NO!

nobody knows the truth, but we have epidemics of cancer and diabetes in a population that are not big soy eaters. If a study should show vegetarians having a disproportionate occurrence of any condition, I'm sure the meat council, beef council, and other groups will shout it loud enough for you to hear.
Adventists, a religion full of begetarians, are usually healthier than the genral population.
Is soy feminizing? Suggest you go to a vegetarian potluck and to a 7th day adventist service and look at the men-see if they look soft, have breasts, whatever else you define as unmanly. Pick out a couple you think look virile and converse with them about their diet.
As someone who has dated a lot of soy-eating vegetarians, I can testify that there's nothing teststerone-challenged about them.
If you're scared of soy, eat nuts- lots of healthy fat, enzymes, and protein.

Hi Sedona,
I'll bet that is near Danforth and Main, where you have such a view.
Were you caught as a passing tourist when they filmed
"My Big Fat Greek Wedding"?
If you own the place where you live, you should have sold NOW instead of then. Selling is good if you move to another prime future development area.
There are still streetcars on Broadview and on Queen St.
Dundas St out to Long Branch, but not a lot more. What were we thinking?
No streetcars on Bloor makes sense, but that is only because of the presence of the subway beneath.
Too many routes were torn up in favour of bus lines, for what reason, I can not understand.
Maybe one day, Toronto will come to its' senses and
go back 40 years to something that works.
The Bloor Viaduct has been retrofitted with a suicide barrier fence to prevent the dismally hopeless from becoming
a red spot on the rush hour traffic below. The public washrooms have all been closed, causing the homeless to use back lanes and walkways as their washroom.
What a country!!

I don't like that either, in general. Experience is what people have done and gone through, and doesn't guarantee knowledge that adequately reflect reality. Same with common sense -- for many people it changes based on mass media reports. I don't really have an answer that would satisfy even me. I personally use a combination of scientific knowledge and how I feel toward food. This is a learning process for me.

I've been on LOTS of soy for 20 years without problems or lumps. My husband has been on soy for 15 years with no breast enlargement and no lumps. My sons have been on soy for 14 years and less- they are developing normally-no breasts.
Years ago, I read of boys in Puerto Rico developing breasts- it was traced to hormones in the chickens they ate. Since cows are also given hormones, your store bought milk problem has hormones in it.

Hi ann
I don't drink store bought milk. At the time, I was only drinking soymilk, as allergic to regular milk.
And the only meat I eat is free range.
If it wasn't for the hormonal tender lumps, the bigger breasts would have been a bonus! (lol)
But if i was a guy, i wouldnot risk soy. the jury is still out on soy.

heard about a guy who tried to push a chanel for cable that was All Puppies All the time. He videoed different breeds of puppies doing what they do and tried to sell it to cable co's for 5 yrs but they didn't go for it. Sounds like it would have been interesting. Wonder if he sold it as a videos ? Could have kittens and other babies.
