My Daughter has been having some terrible armpit odor which just started this summer.
One of the things I was concerned about is the fact she is almost a Vegan, and has vocally expressed that she does NOT like any meat.
I try and supplement her diet with things such as Soy Milk, nuts, eggs, beans(not her fav). On occasion she will eat chicken, and loves shrimp.
The one product that she has consumed in large amounts is Chocolate Soy Milk (Organic). I encourgage this with the hopes of keeping her protein level up.... BUT, I have to wonder if this could be causing a hormonal effect in her, which is causing the very strong body odor. This has gotten to the point that she needs a bath almost 2 times daily in order to get rid of the underarm odor.
Please, any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

puberty in girls in America is starting as young as 8 for white girls, as young as 7 for blacks. Two doctors, Calvin and Agatha Thrash, mds, believe it is due to the increasing proportion of refined carbohydrates in the America diet (see "Diabetes and the Hypoglycemic Syndrome"). They site studies of various cultures that had dramatic decreases in the age of female puberty after WW2, when trade opened up with the west and diets changed drastically among Eskimos, Pacific islanders, and Yemenite Jews who moved to Israel.
I would not expect this to be due to the soy, but you could introduce nut milks if that concerns you.
What is her diet like with regards to simple sugars and refined grains? Is your brand of soymilk sweetened with cane juice-that's dextrose, not healthy. Does she eat white bread and sugar?
You might also want to make sure she's getting adequate omega-3 oil- available in flax seed oil and in pumpkin seeds, if she eats no fish. The beans may be disagreeing with her- suggest you drop them for a few weeks to see if it makes a difference. Is she getting raw veggies-carrot sticks,salads-those have good digestive enzymes as well as fiber. Lastly, is she constipated? How often does she have a bowel movement? What is the transit time for her colon. To find out, have her swallow a few ounces of corn kernals without chewing well to see how soon they show up in the toilet (don't serve corn again till you find out, so you are sure which meal they came from and how long it took to come through).
The chocolate soymilk does have a greater carbo count than vanilla or original, in some brands-this can mean more sugar.

Hi Worried:
One can eat a vegan or meatless diet and still eat poorly. You did not mention fresh vegetables and fruits. Are they part of her diet? If not, they should be every day.
Even organic chocolate soy milk will contain some form of sweetener. Drinking this soy milk in large quantities will increase her blood sugar levels. That, and poor elimination could be contributing to leaky gut. I would replace the soy milk with fresh vegetable and fruit juices. This is where you can get very creative, as there are many healthy drinks you can make. Try yogurt smoothies with live-cultured yogurt and fresh fruit juices. According to Edgar Cayce, the sugar in fresh, raw fruits is well-tolerated by the body (something to do with the live enzymes found in raw fruits and vegetables).
At 8 years of age, she probably is not menstruating yet. Her body odor may have more to do with her sugar intake rather than any hormonal reactions.
A zinc deficiency can sometimes contribute to body odor, and zinc can be lacking in a poor, unbalanced vegan diet.
P.S. Even vegans sometimes snack on processed junk foods, thinking that as long as it's meatless, it's acceptable. How does she view "junk foods"?

I would stop the soy milk immediately, as it is not a good food for anyone. It is highly allergenic and can have 4 times the amount of estrogen in it compared to birth control pills. Please go to www.WestonAPrice.org and get educated on the harmful effects of soy, Juli

Maybe you could try underarm deoderant on her until you get the diet problem straightened out.
Just a thought.

make sure it's deodorant and not anti=perspirant- that clogs pores and messes with de-toxing.The smell might just mean there's bad stuff in her body and her body is doing what it should and pushing that stuff out.
My kids are all males, but have been on soy most of their lives (they breast-fed first) and didn't have early puberty or excess smell except their feet, which I think they purposely cultivate to try to gross each other out).

Hi, Worried.
Is she developing any secondary sexual characteristics? In other words: Could she be becoming menarchal?

Thanks to all for the responses.
As far as any signs of Menarche, none.
She eats a mostly Organic Diet which I promote with the hopes of giving my children a good start in life.
Lots of fresh veggies and fruits are part of her daily regimine.
I think it just may be the Soy Milk after reading the pros and cons.
Also, I came across another question similar to mine on another board, and the culprit was said to be NON-Organic Milk.
Lately I've also switched to Organic Milk to avoid all of the hormones and anti-biotics in Reg. Milk.
I just picked up some Natural Deoderant all Organic also.
She just loves the Soy Milk, but I'll have to replace it with something else with the hopes of getting rid of this problem. The yougurt smoothies sound like a good choice.
Thanks again, and I'll let you know how it goes.

Since some people had commented on the soy, I thought I would mention that I babysit two children, who are one and three years old. They drink copius amounts of soy milk, and they both have a strange, strong body odor, though it doesn't necessarily come from their arm pits. I've often wondered if it was the soy milk.

if she gets more colds when you switch to dairy, try nutmilks instead-1 cup raw nuts to 4 cups water, use blender till looks like milk, strain, chill, sweeten as desired (you can cut a lot of carbs by sweetening with stevia).

Thanks, Worried.
There are sufficient hormones in commercial milk products to create a false menarche--especially in a particularly sensitve individual. See the Bangladesh example from the '70s.
The same is true of too much soy although a lot less common.
Have you tried almond milk?
The odor should change within a few weeks once you hit on the right formula for her. When her natural menarche kicks in, the problem may recur. See the body hygeine archives for suggestions she might try then.
Let us know how she does.
