Hormone Balance Question

Posted by P [15.215] on September 25, 2004 at 00:09:31:

I had a question about various hormones because I was trying to learn more about polycystic ovarian syndrome. I have been reading some information published by NIH and INCIID and they indicated that prolactin levels are elevated significantly both by sleep and activity? I am willing to believe this but since most people are either asleep or active most of the time, how are these readings necessarily inaccurate? Or conversely, if the levels are so easily increased why don't all women have excessive prolactin levels? Can someone explain this to me, please!

Hi P,

Prolactin levels may vary slightly, but as long as periods are normal, and the level is not producing other symptoms, such as lactation, you should not worry.
Some people may have a "prolactinoma" ... a cyst which
can be corrected with meds, not surgery in most cases.
An MRI would be the next step if your levels are consistently high.

Here is a link which explains...

Hi Ron, I always appreciate your input and have been meaning to ask you, are
you a health care professional? Just curious, not being critical. Your ideas
have been very useful to me, many times.

Thanks,
maryb

That doesn't address my question. Thank you anyhow.

Hi, P.

This is a question for your endocrinological gynecologist. This board is mainly interested in WHY things might be awry since correcting that is the most permanent solution to the problem. So far, conventional medicine is not focusing on the why but on what to do about the result. My bias is that this is because there is a lot more money to be made focusing on treatment than upon education towards cure.

I would certainly welcome any better explanation.

Walt

Hi P,

I don't know much about the theory about hormonal balance/imbalance or how it works, but Dr. Stoll often recommends the Three-Legged Stool wellness program as a means for improving hormonal balance. See the article, "How to be Healthy" (link on the homepage). There's also probably an archive on the endocrine system which might give other suggestions for improving hormonal balance.

Best wishes,
Jan DeCourtney, CMT

I am not trying to figure out how to balance the hormone. I am trying to figure out when the test can be properly taken. Thanks for trying. It might be more helpful in the future to respond to the actual question.

I am sorry, but since you said that you would need "more training in this type of problem", that would indicate that you know the type of problem in which you need more training, yet you have failed to provide that information.
