Menstrual Cramps/Overheating Please answer Dr. Stoll

Posted by Tammy on December 08, 2000 at 07:19:39:

Sometimes I have terrible pain with my periods (Im 44). Ive always been like this. Sometimes I fall asleep with the heating pad on me, all covered up in bed, I awaken like a half hr or so later, and within minutes Im hotm and my body is trembling off and on uncontrollably. Can this happen if one is overheated? It goes away within 20 mins.

Hi, Tammy.

Yes, you are just overheated.

You might be interested to know that an instant resolution to these kind of cramps is the application of pulsed diathermy (one pad front, one pad back), set at 12X12 for 20 minutes, works wonders.

Unfortunately, it has to be done every time. However, in MY experience, after several times the next cramps seem to be less severe and finally stop. Most Chiropractors would have such a machine in their offices.

Thank you Dr Stoll, I never heard of being overheated making one shaky like that, what causes it to happen?

Hi, Tammy.

When you are overheated your skin arteries dilate to let the heat out. That, in turn drops your blood pressure. This is why people with heart disease, hypertension or diabetes should not use a sauna or hot whirlpool.

Making sense?
