I have a question about pelvic exams. If a competent and trained doctor is doing an exam, is it pretty safe to say that if there were any cysts, tumors, etc were on the ovaries or uterus, that a doctor would feel something during the exam? I went in for my annual exam and I have had some irregular periods (spotted a few times and have had heavy periods), and he said that my exam was normal and he thought I have what they call "dysfunctional uterine bleeding" but to make sure, he ordered an ultrasound. I have my ultrasound in a few days. I am scared to death. Mostly of ovarian cancer.... I know that is such a terrible cancer and I was wondering if I had a something like this, would he have been able to feel something abnormal during the exam? He said that he was doing the ultrasound to check for possible fibroids or polyps... he said that this sounds more like a uterus problem. I can handle that.. I am mostly concerned that my ovaries could be the problem? I have experienced some bloating too. Could anyone comment on this for me. Thank you.... also... if it is just dysfunctional uterine bleeding, what treatment is there?

Hi,
I had very irregular bleeding and after my gyn did an endomertiral biopsy found that I had an infection. Surprised the gyn as I had not had a baby and not sexually active. Everything was fine for two weeks after taking the antibitocics. After two weeks, I started spotting and called my gyn. He was surprised and had me come in for an exam.
To be safe my gyn ordered a D&C, which just about scared the diggins out of me. It was done on a outpatient basis, and the only thing the gyn found was a uterine polyp. He removed it and I have not had a period or spotting since. Your doc may be playing it safe than sorry. Don't worry about it as it will only aggravate the situation. As of today I'm "50" and premenopause.:-)

BB, its always scarey when a Dr. makes a general statement like that. Don't be afraid. Sometimes fibroids can cause irregular bleeding. I'm only speaking from 2 years of experience. One of the things that was recommended to me from a physicians Asst who uses natural herbs to correct problems like irregular bleeding, is "progest creme". It will help to regulate your period. You can get it in the natural vitamen sections in health food stores in the section for women. A good product I use is put out by Emerita. Just follow the directions. I have been able to control my mensus for 2 years now by using this instead of having a hystorectomy. Now if you do find out you have fibroid tumors, just look them up on the net. There is less and less surgery on those these days.

Hi, Michelle.
There is a limit to what even a highly skilled doc can feel during a pelvic exam. Since an ultra sound is much more sensitive and does no harm, why not if you are worried?
Since most ovarian cancer cells are not normal enough to be hormonally active, cancer is not likely in your case. Your doc is likely right.
Let us know what you learn.

Michelle, are you on the pill?
If so, consider going off it (at least for a while) to see if that corrects the problem. I had the EXACT symptoms you do for over a year and then even weirder stuff started adding to the mix -- frequent nausea, dizziness, feeling faint, migraines with aura, unbearable low-abdomen pain, ...
I've been off the pill for only a short time (less than 6 months) but ALL of these problems have vanished already. Prior to this, I had been on the same pill for 8 years without incident -- it was so bizarre, out of the blue.
TRUST ME -- IF THIS IS YOUR PROBLEM, IT'S WORTH TRYING ... for months, my idiot doctor just kept upping my doses of the pill's hormones. When I look back, I can see an obvious deterioration in my condition that he just didn't "get" no matter how much I complained.
Now I have to worry about birth control, yes, but at least I'm healthy ... and may I add that it was Dr. Stoll and his Bulletin Board friends that finally convinced me it was the right thing to do. (I feel like I know you people?!?)
THANK YOU, DR. STOLL!! (I'll keep you posted if my condition changes!!)

Hi to all. I just got back from my ultrasound and they found either a polyp or fibroid on the uterine lining. The person doing the ultrasound was not sure completely if it is a polyp or fibroid but she says that she leans toward the polyp because fibroids occur usually in the muscle. My gynecologist is out of town until Monday so I do not have a complete interpretation of it. But, now I know this explains the heavy periods, etc. What can they do if it is a polyp or fibroid? Do they have to do more procedures? Also, can this cause abdominal discomfort and a change is bowel habits? have had some increased abdominal cramping and diarrhea. Is this at all related? Thanks....

Hi Michelle,
I had abdominal pain, bleeding between periods, etc. for a while, and had a D&C done, and what the doc found was a uterine polyp. Completely benign. He removed it, and all was well. The procedure takes less than an hour, but it was done in surgery, and you will need to be put to sleep. But don't get general anesthesia, just get something to make you sleep.
I'm not sure if this affects your bowel habits or not. I know I always had increased diahhrea at the beginning of my period, so maybe it is related in some way.

Hi, Michelle.
Surgery is the treatment for what you seem to have and a good D&C might be enough.
Since your other question is SO individual, you will have to watch your GI symptoms after the surgery to see if they disappear.
Let us know what you learn.

hi
well wishes to you
i am sorry to sound like a fool around here, bc i so often say much the same things, but if you are strongly opposed to surgery, and want a different view of the matter, read hulda clark's book, THE CURE FOR ALL DISEASES.
there are a few case histories in the book just like your own.
check it out IF you want an alternative perspective...just a view from another point !

Dear Walt. Can you just tell me with your superior medical opinion WHY the GI tract could become irritable with a polyp or fibroid on the uterine lining? Is it possibly related to hormones or could it be due to the uterus contracting much harder because something "foreign" is there? Thanks in advance.... I talked with the nurse today and she said my doctor just got in and he will look at my report and get back to me. The nurse said that the report was leaning to it being more of a polyp on the uterine lining....

Hi, Michelle.
There might not BE a direct relationship. However, if there IS it is as follows:
Anytime one has symptoms like you are describing, there has to be at least SOME inflammation related to the pathology (polyp?) Inflammation does not restrict itself to the organ where it is but any organ that is close to it (Especially in the peritoneal cavity.)
I am sure you have heard of women with menstrual pain having coincidental flareups of their IBS at the same time. Same mechanism.
Hope this helps.

Thanks a lot for the explanation. Right now I am sort of at my wits end.... I DID talk to my doc and he said that it is a polyp and at our appointment we will discuss our options.... with this polyp, I DO have irregular (longer) periods with some spotting in between. I also think I have some pelvic pain due to this also. BUT really what is bothering me is my bowels right now. For the past three and a half weeks, I have had nothing but diarrhea and abdominal cramping. Here's what happens... I will eat something and I feel like I need to go to the bathroom right away... if I do not have diarrhea right then and there, I will have crampy pain and an ache in my intestinal area UNTIL I have diarrhea to relieve it. Sometimes in this three and a half week time-frame, I will have the urge to go and all that will come out is little pellets or very little stool... THE ONLY thing that relieves the crampy pain is having fulling blown diarrhea that WILL CLEAN ME OUT. And the whole cycle repeats itself... it is making me not want to eat. The crampy pain is not breath taking... it is just annoying but, of course when I have the diarrhea, the cramping pain gets more severe, and then is immediately relieved after I go. I hope this makes sense. I also hope that what I have described rings any bells to you as to what could be going on... I am not running a fever or having any blood in the stool or any other symptom that might be alarming..... what in the world could be going on????????

Hi, Michelle.
To ME, this is a perfect example of LGS (the GI symptoms).
What do you know about that and what are you doing to deal with it?
