cuticle infection of toenail

Posted by Embarrassed!! on March 23, 2000 at 13:07:02:

Dr. Walt...Found your site 2 weeks ago and started the vinegar treatment pronto! My problem is about 2 weeks ago the cuticle area of my big toe got swollen red and tender. The nail had lifted from the bed. I cut it off and a little puss oozed out and it felt much better. But now it is back swollen red and tender again. This happened to my other big toe 2 years ago and took about 3 weeks to heal. I am NOT diabetic, but am wondering if there is anything I can do to speed the healing process. It does feel much better after a hot foot soak and some Advil. I have been keeping it covered with antibiotic ointment. There was no bleeding when I cut off the toenail. I do so hope this works...I cought this from my husband about 3 years ago and have been mortified ever since. Isn't hilarious that women will go to the GYN and not be embarrassed but are mortified to show our feet?!!!!! I also have accompanying athlete's foot but am treating it with Lamisil Cream. Thanks, Doc!

Hi, Embarrassed.

First, the secret of hot soaks is that the more locally you can apply the heat the more effective it will be. SO, what you want to do is apply the heat with a folded wash cloth, directly to the area involved (while pouring hot water over the cloth to keep it as hot as you can stand it--for 5 minutes every hour if acutely inflammed and at least 4 times a day until it is normal) but NOT soaking your entire foot.

This "secret" is true of ANY localized inflammation or infection. MANY visits to the doctor for antibiotics can be eliminated by learning how to do this. You will see that it works a lot faster than antibiotics anyhow.

Hope this helps.

Walt

THANKS, THANKS AND MORE THANKS!! The least I can do for this "office visit" is order your book so I am doing that now! I'm a big believer in a more natural approach to medicine so I'm sure I will get a lot of use out of it...especially with 3 boys to raise!

Lump on ankle that won't go away

I have a lump on my ankle (for about 3 months)It hurts to touch it. If I wear a magnet, it seems to make the lump hard. It's kind of like a bruise but I have freckles so you really can't see it. It is a reddish color. I did have them a few years ago along my shin bone but they eventually went away. I now have one one my right ankle too. I really don't notice it unless I rub up against something or touch it. I take a multi vitamin (juice plus) & eat very well. I don't smoke or drink. What could this be?
