i have had a problem with my right middle finger for about a month now. i had torn my finger nail too low and about a week later it started to hurt and burn real bad on the tip. then, it had pink bumps under a thick skin and if the skin ripped off it bled real bad. it also had a fever. i started putting antibiotics on it and it seemed to get better. it is still very touchy and has a thick layer of skin on it again and will bleed if i rip it off. i can still see the little pink bumps underneath, i dont think its gone yet or will be for a while. i went on the internet to see if i could figure out what it was. and herpetic whitlow is what it resembled. it said i had to have contact with genital herpes. i dont have that and neither does my husband. but i have been having a problem with my gums for about a year. they have been sore and tender and lines will go up my gums between my teeth with little blisters. when i first got is i was under lots of stress and couldnt even brush my teeth because my gums hurt so much. then it would go away and a month later it would come back usually with a sore throat. its getting alittle better now but it still returns. my dentist is lost, he doesnt know what it is. but i think i have herpetic gingivo stomatitis and since i touch my gums alot. and when this happened they were inflammed. i think i transferred it to my finger. what do you think??

Hi, Vikki.
I think this is a bacterial infection that would have cleared up within 48 hours if you had been taught to use the hot soaks for infections described in the archives.
After this length of time is might take a week but that STILL would be much more effective than the oral antibiotics which is your other option.
The first thing for ANY infection of the skin is hot soaks!
Let us know how you do.

dr. stoll, i didnt have any pus in it. it was very tender and had thick skin peeling off it and it was raw, anything hot would have sent me thru the roof. i couldnt put it under any hot water. it had little pink filled bumps under the peeling skin and it was hot. after the topical antibiotics was used. it was better. then more thick skin appeared and started to peel off again. it kind of moved down around my finger. its all scaly and tender still. but better than it was, it likes to be covered up. what did you think about my gums??

Hi, Vikki.
Inflammed tisue ALWAYS hurts more with the hot soaks. It is an indication of how much you need them. You just have to grin and bear it.
I think you need another dental consult. It should be easy for a well trained dentist to tell by looking but is is impossible without seeing it.
Let us know what you learn.

hi, i went to the doctor to see what was up with my finger and she diagnosed it as herpetic whitlow. she prescribed valtrex for 7 days. we will see if it helps with my gums too. it seems to be moving down my finger alittle with lots of crust and pink blisters under the skin.

Thanks, vicki`
Certainly I did not! Just shows how important it can be to actually see the lesion.
Namaste`
