How Can Blood Pressure Be Lowered?

Posted by Pam on July 24, 2002 at 16:35:33:

Dr. Stoll:

How can blood pressure be lowered? Are there various kinds of foods or supplements that can help?

Thank You,
Pam

Skilled Relaxation is the key to lowering blood pressure. Herbert Benson's Book "The Relaxation Response" explains it thoroughly.

Of course, Walt's 3 legged stool for practicing wellness - SR, exercise and eating the right diet - will get you even better results...

You should also limit your salt intake.

1. AVOID SALT AT ALL COSTS!!! Don't cook with it, don't sprinkle it on your food. You don't need it. There is already PLENTY of salt occurring naturally in the foods you eat.
2. If you are overweight, lose those pounds. Heredity has given me HBP and I notice that ANY extra weight dramatically raises that pressure.
3. Eat right. Stay away from the fats and sweet as much as possible. Eat good healthy foods. It's OK to have sweets once in a while but I would really hit the fresh fruits and veggies.
4. Exercise. Just walking for a half an hour each evening would do you good. If you can do more, great. You'll feel better and you're doing your body a big favor.
5. Ask your doctor about what supplements you could take to help you out i.e. Garlic. I believe garlic is a natural blood thinner and can help with HBP.

Good Luck!

Hi Naya,

Hunter-gatherers need a lot more salt than AGs, so it goes back to my statement about eating the right diet. HGs tend to have lower BPs.

Don,

When I increased my salt intake and meat intake, my blood pressure and cholesterol went down! I have a Hunter Gatherer metabolism, and we need a lot of salt compared to Agriculturists, who need to eat a more vegetarian diet. The metabolic diet archives here explain a lot more about this.

Garlic is not indicated for HGs either! I was taking it for health reasons, and found I felt much better once I stopped. AFter I started eating the right diet for me, I found I didn't need a lot of the supplements that I thought I needed.

Different things work for different people, that's the thing you need to remember. You need to learn what's good for YOU!

I bow to your wisdom, oh great rodent! I myself am an HG with very low blood pressure and I never stint on the salt. So, what do I know?

As the others said, SR, right for you diet, and normalization of weight are key. As far as supplements are concerned, consider magnesium and potassium as those are imlicated in majority of HBP. Don't just take all these supplements without knowing anything about them. Here's an interesting site about magnesium: http://www.mgwater.com. And here you can read about potassium: http://www.krispin.com/potassm.html

Don't avoid fat or you will go nuts and will be typing in all caps like Don. Only avoid (partially) hydrogenated fats and excessive polyunsaturated fats as they are proinflammatory.

Naya,

Remember that it is the absence of all the trace minerals (naturally present in real mineral salt), that have been removed from the refined crap most of us eat, that have the most to do with blood preesure in susceptible people.

Naked NaCl is the problem for those who need to avoid it.

LOL Naya!

I am but a lowly rat, tattered and battered from years of experiments! Like you, I am only trying to make sense of everything! We are learning more every day!!!

Walt makes a good distinction - I do use "Real Salt" that contains all the other goodies we need to keep our minerals balanced.

Sounds like you are stuck with the No Salt belief. Stoping
using it gave my dad a massive heart attack a few mo after
stoping. Only people that are salt Sensitive need to watch
their intake and that is a Very small %. Cuting out salt
can Increase BP since it could release Renin which restricts
blood vessles to try and keep the BP normal which Salt
usually does.

I tried the minerals, potassium, magnesium, and calcium
that are said to lower BP but they didn't help. I tried
the herbs that are said to help like Kava, Hawthorne,
St Johns, and valarian and They worked. Tried to figure if
just one would be enough and none of them alone worked But
any combination of 2 did and I didn't need to take them that
long before my BP stayed down. I think that you have to try
different things and see what works for you. Might be
different than many others depending on the cause.

Be careful with things like cuting out salt. Doing it gave
my dad a massive heart attack since we Need salt and table
salt seems to be as good as any or maybe I needed it straight when
my kidneys got damaged. It worked really fast to reverse
heat prostration that may have been leading to a stroke
because my body couldn't regulate the saly and probably
dumping it since I had to live on it to function. Shame my
dad listened to the EX perts and cut it out. he thought I
was crazy to take salt tablets which I needed to function
but he looked like I felt if I didn't take them but he Just
said it was Hot and he Should look and act beat while I was
doing as much as I ever did though sweating like a fountain.
You have to listen to your body and do what works and NOT
do something that THEY say that you should if it Doesn't
help you function better or normal. Luckily my salt need
lessened and I don't need it to function But I am Not
affraid of it. I always used a good bit but then always did
things that made me sweat a lot so I probably lost a lot. If
it Bothered me like some friends I wouldn't use as much.
One friend calls it Poison because they can't tolerate much
which is fine since they have to listen to Their body but
didn't stop me from using it. I just put a lable on the shaker saying,
Poison with a skull and cross bones on it for Them. I kept
it on the coffee table where I eat often when watching TV
so I don't have to get up to go get more salt.

Thanks, Vince.

Remember that real mineral salt (the kind that is mined from ancient sea beds) has 70+ different trace minerals in it. Depending upon your genetics, any one or combination of more than one, might be what will normalize YOUR blood pressure. It is the allopathic paradigm that insists enough studies will finally find that magic mineral that "causes" hypertension.

It is the allopathic paradigm that is flawed. Of course, who makes the money from all these tests (which creates an annuity for them for at least the next hundred years)? The allopaths! What a great system! :o)

Namaste`
