hypertension - spas and hawthorn supplements

Posted by anya on August 23, 2002 at 09:49:38:

Dear Doctor Stoll,

I have mildly elevated high B.P. I am taking a low-dose
pharmaceutical tablet. Someone told me that spa-baths
which usually have heats of around 39o.Celsius are
very bad for hypertension.i.e. they elevate it too much.

Also have you heard anything about the efficacy of
taking Hawthorn (botanical herb) supplement for
lowering B.P. I believe it's Latin name is
Crategeus ( or something like that). I've tried
a Magnesium/Calcium combination for a few months
with very little effect.

Hawthorn is supposedly a vaso-dilator, but when I
looked it up in a Pharmacopaeia, they said it's
effect was very similar to the tablet Digoxin,
which is derived from digitalis. I felt quite
somnolent and "spacey" taking Hawthorn, tho'
I was still taking the lose dose of Atacand as
well ( i.e. Candesartan Cilexitil), a newer A.C.E.

Any feedback on spas and/or Hawthorn and supplements
in general would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

ANYA

Hi, Anya.

The hot tubs are not a problem because they elevate pressure but that they drop it too low (skin arteries dilation) when one is on a medication that sort of interferes with the body's normal adjustment of positional changes.

Your doc can easily explain this to you if he is willing to take the time.

I am not a good enough herbologist to advise you about herbs. See the link on our links page.

Walt
