accurate blood pressure monitors

Posted by GEORGEP on January 13, 2003 at 12:39:20:

When I go to the doctor my blood pressure is always high. I was taking it at home using an omron digital blood pressure kit and my readings averaged around 125/78. I recently went to the doctors and they checked my kit against theirs. The reading they got was 160/96. My kit was 166/81. The nurse said it was not accurate. I also have a "aneroid kit w/stethoscope and dial. I had brought that one to them also. She checked it and said it was more accurate.I was going to ask the doctor about using a "ambulatory kit" for one day. I read that this gives you a "true picture" of what your blood pressure is because it fluctuates all day long. Do you think I should ask the doctor?? I just need to find out if I just have "white coat hypertension."

Hi, GeorgeP.

In my opinoin, your machine is just as accurate as the nurse's.

Check your BP at least a couple of times a day (best use the same times) and record the results. Be sure to take in your record every time you go in.

Any doc who would treat the white coat syndrome, without this record counseling him to not do so, is not a doc you want to be going to.

Thanks!!! So I can use the digital monitor?? I have been using the aneroid one with the dial and stethoscope and the readings are 125/130 over 80/85. The omron digital kit gives me lower readings... In your option do you think I just have "white coat hypertension." ? My blood pressure is only high at the doctors office... Do you still think my readings at home should be lower?

Thanks, GoergeP.

How much lower and is the difference consistant?

The readings you sent before certainly were not treatable with medications.

I get readings like 125/78 and lower using the omron digital kit. When I use the aneroid kit with the dial and stethoscope the readings are in the range of 125/135 over 80/85. This morning when I checked the reading was 120/80.
I have to see my doctor next week.. I guess what I need to know is do I just have White coat hypertension?? It looks that way to me.... What do you think???

Thanks, GeorgeP.

It looks like it but your doc will only be convinced by looking at your recorded pressures from home.
