Hi Dr. Stoll, somewhere I read that in some cases, the water pill works better for some patients with heart/BP problems. I had a slightly high BP last month's doctor's visit. He doubled the Diovan and 4 weeks later my BP was even higher--top #178. He changed my water pill from Torsemide to Furosemide and wants me back in 3 weeks to do blood work. Question: Is there danger of a stroke if I leave off the Diovan and just go with the water pill for 3 or 4 weeks until we can check BP again? Also, I have a soft heart murmur.

Hi, Ruby.
Totally uncontrolled hypertension takes an average of 20 years to cause things like coronaries and strokes. Symptoms do not even begin until 15 years after uncontrolled hopertention begins.
This is not an emergency!
What are you doing about the causes of your hypertension? Diet, exercise, SR, essential fatty acids, magnesium, etc.
What all the meds you have described are doing is putting black tape over the red lights on your dashboard while the causes continue. Of course just forcing the hypertension to stay in reasonable limits also helps put off the complications of uncontrolled hypertension.
Hope this helps.

Dr. Stoll, I don't know what is causing the hypertension. Yes, I am exercising (walking) every day; also, I'm doing chair-Yoga which is very relaxing. On November 25,2003, I had surgery -- systocele and rectocele(sp?) -- my bladder and rectum were dropped and pushing on my vagina. Most of that soreness is gone. I had gained weight over the last year, and am off all sweets, most fats, and eating more veggies and fruits. I am measuring the quantities. I lost 4 pounds in February and 6 pounds in January. No, I am not on whole foods, like you put me on several years ago in Kentucky. I am thinking about that; don't know if I can handle that at this age. All other tests were great. Cholesterol was good--the good C was 79; liver & kidneys were fine, too. BP is the only thing bothering me. I am not bothered yet with arthritis, and such. I am also easing myself off Diet Coke (asparatame).

Thanks, Ruby.
How often are you doing the "chair yoga".
