high blood pressure for 15 years and sick of it

Posted by georgia on June 13, 2003 at 10:47:14:

Hi Dr. Stoll, I have had hypertention for 15 years. Been taking Verapamil, a calcium channel blocker for about that many years. BP goes up and down constantly. Went to the dr. today for a sore throat and bp was 168/96. By the way I'm 59 years old, almost 60. Came home and took bp and still high, 146/96. I took it the other day and it was 119/80. So, we have quite a difference up and down constantly. I take many supplements, have tried everything I know to do. SR, 2 x day since Jan., power walking for 2 miles a day, 5 x a week, try to eat wisely, etc. Salt doesn't seem to affect it. Any advice. I'm discouraged. Thanks so much.

Hi,

I think some people who have high blood pressure have it because of their genes. My husband has it and so does his mother. They are both on medication but they are both what I call "Type A" personality. They get uptight over crap! I'm not suggesting you are this type but if you are SR would be very helpful. I've tried to get my hubby to do SR but he thinks it is a load of xxxx. You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink.

Please don't take offence. I'm not suggesting you are like this, but many are. They should learn about their condition and do something about it. But my hubby thinks he knows best! One of these days he will drop dead and I will say I told you so. It's sad.

Steve, I drink plenty of water, but maybe not that much. I'll try it. Thanks.

Thanks anotherview. I do SR, since January at least once a day. I guess I'll try to fit it in twice.

Thanks, Georgia.

My first question, of course, is how you certified that the SR is actually producing the relaxation response? How long have you done the certified SR twice a day?

My next is: are you taking at least 2000 milligrams of omega 3s twice a day?

My next point is about exercise: Aerobic exercise (in conjunction with SR) is almost an absolute necessity when trying to stabilize blood pressure.

Finally a comment: The problem with fluctuating BP is that your medication dosage is the same every day, whether it is a day with a BP of 168/96 or a day when it is 119/80. The problem is that it might get too low on those days when it is already lower and so precipitate a stroke or coronary because the pressure is not high enough to perfuse the tissue.

Pressures like this are much better controlled by something other than medications.

Walt

Dr. Stoll, To answer your questions, How do I certify that the SR is actually producing the relaxation response? Ive been doing it since January, but only once a day.

I'm taking about 2200 mg. of Omega 3's a day, 1000 mg of Omega 6, with GLA, Omega 9's and lignan. These get expensive.

I power walk 2 miles per day, using 3 lbs. of weight in each hand. (Leslie Sansone's Walk Away the Pounds Express video).

I very much appreciate your help. Thanks again. Any other suggestions are welcome. PS What about Hawthorne berry extract? I've heard it helps.

Thanks, Georgia.

Now, get your SR certified with biofeedback and start doing it twice a day without fail.

Next, start adding "Real Salt" to your diet (archives).

Next, begin eating as close to a WFD as you can.

Finally cut out all the EFAs except 2000 milligrams of omega 3s twice a day.

Let us know how you do.

Since you can get your BP down, it may be you aren't
relaxed when it is high. I take mine a few times and try
to relax in between and open and close my hand to try to
loosen the arm and I straighten it out.

I got mine down to a decent level when starting to lift
weights for fear of doing harm. I tried pottasium, calcium,
and magnesium that are said might help and the aminow,
arginine and another I can't remember. I tried Kava,
Hawthorne, St Johns Wort, and Valarian and they brought it
down. I found that when I needed, I had to take 2. Any 2
worked.

There is also a technique of squeezing hand grippers where
NASA learned that it lowers BP when trying to increase the
amount of G forces that pilots could take. You squeeze
one for 10 sec and them squeeze with the other hand for 10.
